Hi. I've managed to assemble a 128k mars texture. But it's in greyscale. I would appreciate any advice about how to add color to it. Thanks.

I have no idea how you could colour it though,Jestr

No. The image above clearly shows a stripe where illumination directions changes from top to bottom and vice versa. So the images seems to be taken at different daytimes. A first step would be to create an unshaded surface map and a bump map out of this (multi)preshaded raw version - quite a bit of work.

I think it is here:
ftp://ftpflag.wr.usgs.gov/dist/pigpen/m ... lon180.zip
but the file is more 1 GB (1032358 KB)

the data is 256pix/degree mola derived. i can't actually find the bookmark to where I originally downloaded it but it's not any of the above! It's actually only ~92k true resolution. So I would be interested if anyone has found anything of a higher resolution. What resolution is ftp://ftpflag.wr.usgs.gov/dist/pigpen/m ... lon180.zip?

I tried to download this file, and after 9 hours got nothing but a corupted zip fiie. I may try again tonight. But thats all I do. If you can't get a complete archive then there isn't much sense downloading now is there. If I get it downloaded complete I will post the info on how big it is.

I might answer a PM or a post if its relevant to something.
Ah, never say never!!
Past texture releases, Hmm let me think about it
Thanks for your understanding.

Their server has been switched to very low speed: In principle ,I can download with 375KByte/sec, but got only a small fraction of that. Told me that it takes 4 hours Not my glass of beer...
Bye Fridger
The original file is MDIM 2.1 Which can be found at

I made a 64k vt from this about 9 months ago and put levels upto 32k on the motherlode site. They are in grayscale png format with a 1k tile size.
Level5(64k) is ~800mb so i never uploaded it. There is also a crude overlay colouring in the package.
The full resolution is 93k as mentioned before. Scaling to 128k is no real advantage over 64k.

I had Rich send me a 2k version of his texture so I could show him what it would look like colored. This is what I came up with.
As you see its not to bad. Sure it could use some work but I only took about three minutes with it. I told him if he liked the results I could send him the colormask for his texture. Its only 16k but can be easily resized for his 128k texture. Because it is just a color mask there really is no problem with inlarging it this big. But I never heard back from him. Oh well, you know the saying, you can lead a horse to water!
Don.

re
for my 16k mars i used Gimp and vips/nip
with gimp the map was cut into 4k tiles and then colorised with the colorize plugin.
Then inported it into nip and colorized a gray scale map with a 2k map i airbrushed
then combined the two images ,one solod the other somewhat transparent
then repeated this until i got what i wanted
This is what i am planing on using for the "flat"64k( or a 128 from the 92k master ) mars map after i remove the shadow and hilights .
if you want spifics i can post more
a step by step
also the map i am using is from Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS) -----hear is a link to the 64 and 256px/deg.----
