Temperature

Post #1by Angry Space Goat » 08.06.2005, 01:09

How accurate is the temperature readout in Celestia? I normally use it to gauge the habitability of my planets, and I'm just wondering if I can rely on it, or if I'll have to do the math myself.

It's strictly the black-body value. It doesn't take atmospheric warming into account.

Yeah, I would figure that. Otherwise, that means that Earth would be a nice, balmy 1 degree farenheit.

Does the temperature readout take binary systems into account?

How do i take the atmospheric warming into account?

Is there a roundabout value that i can add to the blackbody temperature for every type of sun?
Or do i have to take different atmospheres into account.

Only thing i want to do is get a good guess of the hability, like Angry Space Goat.

That's one of the planned features that has not yet been added to the new code for v1.4.0.

It's not easy. There are many effects that have to be taken into account. Atmospheric composition, including the amount of water, cloud cover, ground color and the proportions of the different kinds of gasses in the atmosphere, all make a difference. However, there's a calculator at http://astrobio.net/news/terraform.php that can give an estimate.

How long will it be before 1.4.0 is released?
