I contacted the author and he was surprised it even worked in OpenOffice. It was written for Excel.

In general, you should not be surprised if many programs cannot properly handle character codes greater than 127, the basic ASCII set of 7bit characters.

The example image is from my brief test on my own system, which worked fine for me with the OpenOffice prerelease for v1. You're the only one to report problems that I recall.
