ElChristou,

Celestia is NOT commercial software, but rather an OpenSource product. Naturally this involves quite a few authors. These along with the Copyright Owner (Chris) are to be found at the canonical place (Help -> About... || AUTHORS file). I think there is no reason whatsoever to repeat that stuff on a splash image.

Incidentally, on my fast computer the splash is only visible for 1-2 seconds, far to little time to read any details... ;-)

But emotions, appetite, curiosity...these things can be conveyed even in a short period of time.

Just my "two cents" as my dear American friends tend to say...

Bye Fridger

To me, it isn't necessary to display any names on the splash screen. Just a nice picture with the software's name. And not even the version number. Keep it simple, DAMMIT ! It is NOT the same as the "about Celestia" box, found on some menu.

Instead of displaying Celestia's name on the foreground and the planets/moons in the background, it should be the reverse : Planets and moon on the foreground, and CELESTIA (all in capital) as a dimmed name printed on space itself, in the background. The planets should hide some parts of the name, which should show itself like a mysterious aura floating around and covering ALL the universe !

I suggest putting Saturn on the foreground, with only a part of its rings showing with a slope of about 30?°, or else Jupiter and Io, to conform with Celestia's icon. CELESTIA should rises BEHIND the planet/moon, and be transparent, like a "suggestion" instead of an agressive name.

EDIT : ElChristou,
I certainly don't want to see Celestia loading like some heavy Photoshop like software, with all license numbers, version number, authors, etc. This is terribly ugly and cluttered. Like I said above, the splash screen is not the "about this software" window, found in one of the menus. It's just a picture to entertain the user while it's loading. Ideally, there should not be any splash screen anyway.

Text or not, this won't change the time of loading... it depend only of the dimension of the file used.

For all people over there, don't forget those example in this post are for a 1600x1200 screen, on a 1024, those splash, specialy the typo looks too big...

Great...

Christophe has just committed some code to CVS, where from a directory "splash" with an arbitrary number of splash images one is picked randomly and subsequently displayed...

This is a lot of fun.

What are the next steps after this new code, to have it in a new version??

Tonight there is a mini tornado over Asuncion, so I cannot upload the last splashs... (problem with connexion...).
So tomorrow I hope.

Bye

The standard splash screens are working for all OS's. Just replace the celestia-splash.jpg in the Celestia installation directory (windows) or in /usr/local/share/celestia (Linux) by your favorite one.

Christophe's new random splash selector code works only in Celestia-KDE as far as I can see (he only modified the KDE-specific kdeapp.cpp). Chris should adapt it for Windows...

EDIT:

Sorry, splashes presumably ONLY work for Linux! See further below...

Are you sure the plash screen is displayed under Windows too? I wasn't aware this had been implemented, if that's the case then my last commit breaks it. Anyway, a quick grep for 'splash.jpg' doesn't show anything in the windows source files.

I guess you are right Christophe! I thought I remember the splash to show up on my XP Laptop, but after checking SourceForge it seems: NO splash images for Windows....(My Laptop is at home right now and I am at work)

So ELChristou will never be able to look at his own creations ;-)

Hi,

Well I'm not a Windows user... personally I have modified the "logo.png" file of the osX version.

So on: another splash; I don't want to go too close to the surfaces to have the best quality of textures... This one is for the lettering only. Simple, there is nothing!!

So were splashes ported to Mac OS? Then Windows would be the only OS without splash images...

That one I DO like! However the /engraved/ lettering is quite nonsensical from a physics point of view ;-) . Escher would have liked it, however...Know Escher?

You display the letters as being /engraved/ into Europa and Jupiter, while this is clearly impossible like this.

Yes, this is physicaly possible, if you admit that what is engraved is not Europa and Jupiter, but an image of Europa and Jupiter.
