T00fri's Titan@Celestia: Dramatic 4k improvement, Download

Hi all,

after 2 evenings of work, my new 4k Titan texture is finished. I'll make it available for download here tomorrow.

Got to go to bed now...

The dramatic new resolution features derive from the latest hires imaging of the Feb. 15 T3 flyby, notably a global 3962x3962 pixel composite of 16 (!) images (PIA06185.tif) and a lower resolution global image centered around Xanadu.
I have also included the highest resolution image of the Huygens landing site, that is now displayed with outmost precision! I made cylindrical projections of the respective photos with 'mmps' and took great care of their correct alignment. All borders are smoothed such that the texture makes a nice, homogenous impression. Coloration was again done by means of the available 'natural color' surface photo, used as a template.

Here is a tiny 800x400 reduction of the 4k cylindrical map:

Next some Celestia previews:

1) Top: illustrating the new degree of resolution, centered around Xanadu,

2) Bottom: Closeup of the Huygens landing site region. Note the little dark circle corresponding to the precise position!

3) A Titan closeup, illustrating the high amount of contrast and resolution:

4) A harmonic "Duett": My Saturn texture with its new blue 'hat' and Titan (with orange haze switched off):

Enjoy,
Bye Fridger

Wow, that was fast! Those images are barely a week old.
Fascinating screenshots...!

Wow, I don't know if it's feasible but maybe a VT could be made out of this--or is it already a VT? 8O

Can anyone point out the location of the 440 km across crater Cassini found with radar so we could see if it shows up in the infrared images?

Brendan,

no doubt, it's the conspicuous circular feature nicely visible on my screenshot above (top image) that is centered on Xanadu! Here (in blue) is the radar path of the T3-flyby of Feb. 15
Image

Also the size as measured on my 4k cylindrical map fits: with Gimp I measure on average 170 pixel as diameter and get ~440 km with my resolution of ~2.6km/pixel.

Hi all,

as promised, here comes my 4k Titan update (14.1 MB) with all the new imaging info from the February 15 T3-flyby for download. It corresponds to the screenshots and descriptions above.

Just unzip the ZIP archive in your 'extras' folder. Then your default Titan texture will be appropriately modified. Please let me know if there are problems with Windows. For Linux I have tested everything.

Great, Fridger, thank you!

A question...
I notice some differences between the old 2k and the new 4k; notably, in the lower left corner, some bright "islands" have gone missing. Do you think this is because of differences in the imaging process, or is it possible that the landscape (or it??s??reflectiveness) have actually changed in the interval between the two flybys?

Runar,

the 'bright islands' were clouds close to the South pole that the Cyclops people have decided to eliminate. It's even mentioned in one of their captions. One striking finding of the T3-flyby was that the locations and the amount of white clouds had changed substantially, as compared to the previous flyby.

There are some quantitative changes in the 'metrics' of the familiar hires image left of Xanadu by < 10 pixels. This also has affected the Huygens landing site.

Cheers,

Bye Fridger

I don??t know if it is problem(under Windows). But there is an area of very low resolution near Xanadu.Take a look:

Or see in http://br.f1.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/djansenferreira and search for low resolution area near Xanadu 1 and 2

Danielij,

I can't make the resolution higher than corresponding to the available
data ;-) . In the region you were displaying, the resolution is
nevertheless way better than it was previously, but certainly
much worse than to the /left/ of Xanadu. The feature you have
enlarged just corresponds to the 440km 'crater' that was so nicely
visible on the radar scanning data of Feb. 15.

Nice work, John.

I notice you made use of the full resolution of the Feb 15 mosaic
(4kx4k) to the left of Xanadu via an 8k texture. I decided to reduce
the mosaic by a factor of two, since I felt the huge difference in
resolution (relative to the neighborhood) would be showing up too
much etc. Also I notice you did not add the /new/ (global) /medium/
resolution photo to the right of Xanadu that beautifully shows the
crater visible on the radar scan. Also it seems, you did not add the
available hires Huygens landing area? Any special reasons?

After the blue Saturn, this Titan work is quite impressionant...
Well roll on the cylindrical tutorial...
