It had done in .3ds and converted to the Orbiter native .msh file, i see in 'Tutorial' on the Vinka site. I know there are converters to .msh, but I don't know how to turn .msh into .3ds (or .CMOD) . Some Orbiter models have had converted for Celestia (ISS, for example).... Who knows? JeamCham wrote:It's a .msh file. How can we convert this to 3ds ? Is it possible ?

Okay guys, I made a Tintin rocket almost from scratch. It's all smooth in Celestia. I'll upload it to the motherlode, if there's some interest. Here's the result :
"Well! I've often seen a cat without a grin", thought Alice; "but a grin without a cat! It's the most curious thing I ever saw in all my life!"
I'm interested!
Yes Cham, please post your Tintin model I tried ScyBladeghost's model, but the checkerboard pattern was out of alignment (see pic). It worked fine in 3D Max and I did try to correct the problem, but no luck yet.

ScyBladeghost,
nobody is blaming you. You made some stunning models, like the Valley Forge, and we are gratefull for that !
I hope you're still working on the LEXX, and the BH spaceship.

No fault!

I agree with Cham! Wasn't blaming you for anything at all. The model worked fine in 3D Max (version 6) I have, it's only in Celestia that it breaks apart like that. Loved the Valley Forge and Event Horizon models, both are working quite well at the moment Looking forward to any others you release! Great to see someone working on the old sci-fi ships!

Valley Forge
..WOW.. great models...
I have some quick Questions.
1. What modeler did you use?
How did you keep the models polys down and the size of the file so small?
Did you have any problems with the flip normals? If so how did you solve them?
I have been working slowly on a model of a O'Neil style habitat. and been running into, poly problems and flip normal problems...
here is the link to the model so far.
also here are some images i made in the modleing render.

can you help ?

Answers:
1. I used Discreet's 3DS MAX 7 to build the models.
2. Normals were fine I had no problems with them.
any problems with normals you just invert them. I know some modeling programs do that, :ie screw up normals.
nice station by the way. what are you using to build your model?
65 MB for a 3ds file ? Looking at your model, I suspect there's a problem. It's way too big for your model. I have some VERY detailed 3ds meshes on my HD and they are about 20 MB, not much more. I don't think your model has as much details as the big Nostromo (from Alien), and the "Peacemaker" (another SF spaceship) I run in Celestia.
Maybe you gives too much polygons to the curved parts.

About the torus, it depends on its relative size. It needs more polygons if the surface is very curved, that is, if the big radius isn't much bigger than the smaller one.
The problem is about spheres, cylinders and torus, because of their smooth surface. I select those parameters (I dunno if it's the same in your 3D modeler. Mine is Cheetah3D for OS X) :
Cylinder : Sections longitudinal, usualy 60 or 80
Sphere : Longitudinal, 60 or 80,
Sections parallel, usually 40 or 50
Torus : Sections longitudinal, usually 60 or 80.
I'm using much more sections if I'm using the Boolean functions.

As an example, I'm working right now on a moonbase project. The 3ds file is only 3.5 MB, and there's some details, as you can see on the pictures below. I have a version fully texturized, but it's all messy, so I'll abandon the textures and add more 3D details instead. Only the ground has a lunar texture. It's fun to fly very close to the base

Holy carp, Cham!!
You *are* gonna make that releasable to the public, aren't you?
You guys are absolutely amazing with these things. I've tried to get the hang of 3D rendering for hours on end, and I just can't seem to do it....
