add-on help

Post #1by billybob884 » 17.08.2002, 18:04

Hey, I was wondering, you know how when you right click an item, that little menu comes up and one of the itmes is 'Info'? Well, I have an add-on solar system (it is a fake one) and I wanted to know how do you change the web address that it goes to. Thanks!

It's especially unfair, considering the plethora of helpful posts you've given to everyone else today!

Sorry, I'm afraid I don't know for sure, but since I don't like to see anyone sad  , I did some investigation. I didn't find any URLs in the dat and ssc files. :( This, plus the fact that I don't think the Linux version has that feature at all ( at least, it has no context menu ), leads me to believe that those URLs are hard-coded into the windows version.

But I haven't looked at the source code, so I may be wrong.

Oh yet, Mike

I find also the amount of your senseless comentarys are unambiguously too highly. Would restrict you yet on meaningful. It disturbs to read always only "Very neat!", etc. If you is boring, go yet a little walk.

I'm afraid that the URL is hard coded into winmain.cpp right now. Yuck. It's very easy to change this to something that can be specified per-object in a .ssc file. In fact, this would be a very useful feature . . . Add-on writers could put links to their web sites to document their creations. Also, there are a lot of solar system objects that don't have working links now because there's no page for them on the hard-coded info site--per-object URLs would be a solution for this.

Well Mike, that's an admirable sentiment, but keep in mind some of us can't spend too much time reading every message, so when we see the reply to a posted question and think, "aha, someone knows the answer!" and look into the thread only to find it's Mike saying "me too!" or "I don't know!"... well, it's just time wasted that I'd rather spend reading something I didn't know already. Oh, and keep in mind that Chris reads the forum too, so saying "ask Chris!" is kind of redundant.

Please treat this as constructive criticism! Informative posts are quite welcome.
Cheers,

Paul
