Just a short question.
Yesterday I saw this site: http://autopackage.org/. Is there any plans on releasing Celestia with this autopackage-system?
I think it would be worth a try since a major reson why people avoids Gnu/Linux-systems is that they do not have a common installation-procedure for the applications (as Windows has).
Any thoughts on this?

As far as I know Windows has no installation procedure. Every program you install just tosses everything and the kitchen sink in a directory under Program Files with minimal checks as to what version of Windows you're running. No code reuse across applications is possible unless files are copied (installed just seems inapropriate here) under system[32], which is exactly the point where things start to get scary...
Trust me, even with several incompatible package management systems, program installation is way better done on Linux.
As to autopackage, their homepage states:
It does not support integration with the native package manager although these features are planned for after the 1.0 release.
That's a showstopper for me, at least until 1.0 comes out.

I think every complex UNIX/LINUX application should really be recompiled on the new host system!
In principle, this process can be largely automatized as Gentoo Linux demonstrates. It's the safest and best method of integration into the existing environment.
People should be re-motivated to stop being afraid of compiling things themselves! Originally, in UNIX/LINUX recompilation was native and natural and /all/ users knew how do do it.
The Linux community was simply mislead by distributors through this inadequate competition with Windows philosophies and an explicit lack of self confidence!
Since I know my way very well both in Linux and Windows, I can assure everyone that with just this little bit of required extra know-how in UNIX/Linux, practically every task is performed much faster and more elegantly on a Linux system than under Windows.
The only exception are a number of Multimedia applications, where Windows is ahead do to the close collaboration of the 'industry'...

as for an auto sys. i do not know ??
it sounds like a nice idia but there is the prob. of linux, mac, and windows
filling sys.
but seeing as i am stuckfor the time being on xp
and i HATE Program Files
i want my programs where I
want them
say in user, bin , include, lib, etc ...
and i do try to remove extra .dlls from files (by hand)
