A Bishop Ring Orbital
I'm just starting to learn Anim8tor to make 3ds models for the Orion's Arm universe; this is a basic model of a Bishop Ring, a rotating habitat which uses the strength of carbon fibres to support a large open habitat against the centrifugal force required to produce artificial gravity.
Being only a few hundred kilometers across (no more than 2000) this structure could be made with real materials rather than unobtanium.
(reference)
Mind you, I tried landing on the internal living surface of this habitat in Celestia and half the structure disappeared; the model acts very strange when you land inside it, which is a pity..

A Bishop Ring Orbital
looks real good.
If waht you say is a glitch in Celestia, it may nix my plans for a "ringworld" or niven fame.......
.
My L-5 station is soon on the way for public use..

Re: A Bishop Ring Orbital
There is a Ringworld by Marc Griffith http://sourceforge.net/projects/mostlyharmless/ (3 versions, the most recent in 2 packages, medres .dds or lores)... you can see 2 little pics on my catalog, SF pages. (Be careful: the install was created for ancient version of Celestia, you can create a complete folder and place it in the extras folder)Beowulf01 wrote:it may nix my plans for a "ringworld" or niven fame...
Nice! Your screenshots remembered me some old books by Ben Bova or Clarke, many pictures by the great Chesley Bonestell... what a good ideaMy L-5 station is soon on the way for public use..

Thanks, Im DL now.
I ran into a problem with my L-5 addon and ill post on this soon.

Here is another artificial type world, a *shellworld*;
take a small, seismically inactive planet or moon, and excavate deep living caverns in the crust; you can use the excavated material to build upwards on the surface, perhaps (as here) leaving holes open to space to be filled with temporary atmospheres for those who like to camp out under the stars.

An early description of such a world was given by Olaf Stapledon
in 'Starmaker'.

I have made yet another 3ds model of a closed cylindrical habitat for the OA Freehauler project;
here is the image
http://tinypic.com/14pd92
this habitat collects energy from the magnetic field of a gas giant
such as Jupiter, and has a cylindrical landscape inside like Arthur
Clarke's Rama or like one of Peter Hamilton's Edenist orbital
habitats, lit by a sunstrip to grow plants and some food crops;
there ain't no such thing as a free lunch, of course, and habitats
like this have to recieve periodical orbital boosts or they fall
into the gas giant through magnetic friction.

Two more early attempts at Anim8tor modelling;
http://tinypic.com/15bo74
http://tinypic.com/15abtg
The star freighter carries volatiles from the cold outer regions of a solar system to the energy-rich but dry inner regions; redistribution of resources in this fashion will increase the habitability of most systems of worlds manyfold.
now, I don't know if it is something I am doing wrong, or if it is my inadequate graphcs card; but these models appear to be white and colourless unless you get them at exactly the right angle...
strange stuff.

That means, that you apparently use a Nvidia MX card. The Nvidia drivers are faulty for the MX cards for quite some time now, and there is no light at the horizon. I'm thinking of changing my video card, because that annoys me more and more - perhaps an ATI card if Nvidia isn't able or not willing to adress the problem.
maxim
Good; that hopefully means that the models will be usable on other systems.
I am adding little details here and there to make them more interesting; here is the command module of the starfreighter,
http://www.siderealgames.com/uploads/starfreighter.jpg
and here is the hummingbird pod with a pilot in residence
http://tinypic.com/15ilhk
(this second one shows the pod in its bleached out mode; I have added a texture which makes it look a little more interesting).

I have been planning on putting Halo in Celestia, but havent gotten around to anything yet. Looks like I could use the same method as the Ringworld addon. Interesting.
Oh and for those that dont know, Halo is a ringworld sort of thing in the popular Xbox game of the same name. (if you still dont know what i'm talking about, just google it, I'm sure it wont be hard to find. Cause i know there are some out there...)
But anyway, maybe I can use the same method for Halo, but I still need to find a way to get a good texture for it into Celestia. Still very new at this ling/texturing stuff.

This new agricultural space station is based on a design by Gerard K O'Neill himself.
http://tinypic.com/1825o6
I like the silvery reflective nature of the mirrors; the mirrors collect sunlight and concentrate it into a growing area inside the rotating cylinder,
and depending on the size and shape if the mirror could be used right out at Jupiter or Saturn orbit.

And a Dyson Swarm; I've tried several different methods of making these objects; this is the best so far.

If you don't know what a dyson swarm is
I've done a search for you;

Hmm, several years ago, I've try to install a Dyson Sphere, but never find a good method to do this... can't understand how to create and run textures (map, clouds)INSIDE the sphere. Even with different systems by Selden, the result did not satisfy me, so i left this stuff. But I must try again, now, I want to design the Dyson Sphere that appears in the Laurent Genefort's series 'Omale' (These are novels that use this kind of artifact, like the 'Orbitsville' series by the english author Bob Shaw) Jeameburacum45 wrote:And a Dyson Swarm

Speaking of ringworlds, this is a first attempt at a Banks Orbital
http://tinypic.com/18lzsx
the Orbital concept is much smaller than a ringworld, and only a few million kilometers across; it orbits the star like a planet, and spins once a day to produce one gee of centrigugal gravity. This idea was dreamt up by Iain Banks in his Culture novels.
