Can anyone tell me or give me a link on how to get the appropriate "stretch" near the poles when creating a texture? And how do you make a nice and "seamless" texture without mirroring parts of the image? I use Photoshop.

Short version:

Make a pic of the polar region as seen from above.
Use polar->rectangular filter from photoshop.
Merge polar region part of result with the rest of the texture.
finetune.

Seams:

Use offset filter from photoshop to move seam into the middle of the pic.
Do artwork.
Move back.

That's how I made the topographic map for my Blue Venus POVray texture. Works quite nicely. :)
