Crashes in OSX 10.3.5

Love Celestia - Neat program

Everytime I approach a planet, OSX freezes and I need to shut down and reboot. I have tried to approach Earth about 10 times and have crashed everytime when I get within a million or so km. Any fixes or ideas ? Please - not too technical I'm not a programer.

i-Book OSX 10.3.5 933MHz, 640 mb RAM, ATY,RV280M9+ VRAM (Total) = 32 MB

I'm having the same problem. Switching-off ring shadows fixes it for me.

I checked and the shadows were off. I find that it almost always craches when I use the "Z" to slow down. Everything seems to run well until I hit Z.

I had exactly the same problem, also under 10.3.5. The fix suggested works for me, too.

On an unrelated note: when is the Celestia 1.3.2 for MacOSX coming?

The "fix" is to tell Celestia not to use the buggy "vertex program" feature of the OpenGL drivers.

To do this, edit Celestia/celestia.cfg and remove the # from the beginning of the line that says

# IgnoreGLExtensions [ "GL_ARB_vertex_program" ]

It's only my G5 that suffers from "GUI freezes" on celestia, I don't encounter any problems on both my iMac's (17" & 20").
The G5 has a radeon 9600 pro card and the iMac's have NVIDEA GeForce cards.
My G5 was tested with a NVIDEA card borrowed from another G5 and Celestia ran fine on that configuration, no fixes applied!

My G5 has shown the same "freezing" symptoms also using other (including apple-) software with the radeon card on all Panther releases!

I wouldn't be surprised if the whole problem lies in the ATI/Mac combination.

Regards.
Pat.
