Newbie - Using DDS textures

Hello,

I've downloaded Celestia 1.2.4, Windows version. It runs smoothly on my Athlon/1133, 256 MB RAM, nVidia Vanta/ 16MB
However, when I've downloaded some extra DDS files (mars4k.dds, moon4k.dds), I run into trouble: I tried to copy them in textures/medres, then modify the data/solarsys.ssc file to reflect the changes in texture, but without any effect: actually now I have a nice pink ball as Mars and a grey one as the Moon.
My entries in solarsys.ssc are like this:

"Mars" "Sol"
{
# Texture "mars.jpg"
Texture "mars4k.dds"
BumpMap "marsbump1k.jpg"
BumpHeight 2.5
Color [ 1 0.75 0.7 ]
............................................

Please help me to use these textures.

Thank you.

Axel

Hi,

either there's an error in the ssystem conf or the textures are too large for your GeForce, I'd guess.

Take care,
Axel

*If* I remember well then there was a key to shift through the texture sets (low, med, hi).

Try to locate it and try it.

Thanks for the tips. Another thing: I have Windows NT 4 WS SP6 installed, so it could be a DirectX problem, too (DirectX 4.04.1381.276)

I, too had the Earth, Moon and mars .dds files in my Celestia and had exactly the same problem. I used to have a Nvidia TNT2 card, which I narrowed down to being the problem. What card are you using??

I have just installed a GeForce4 Ti4400 128Mb DDR, now the .dds textures work fine, apart from taking about 10secs to load in but this is due to my slowish harddrive.

Also, WooooHooooo I can now use the vertex and pixel shaders and the specular effects look awsome.

Practically certain to be your video ram, as the files themselves are bigger than 16MB :O(

Either get a better graphics card (your current card is shamed by an Athlon 1.1Ghz) or just use lower res textures.
