Here's my version of the above mentioned Hubble model.
Image
I had to make a few changes as the original had a lot of holes and lots of little bits missing.I downloaded the obj model as well as the Max one and they were the same.I have made my own textures for it (except for using Terrier's solar panel texture-hope this is cool?).See what you think-there are still a few holes, but it looks a lot better.I have made a CMOD version for people with Celestia v 1.3.2 or later which you can find here
http://celestiamotherlode.net/creators/jestr/BigHubbleCMOD_V3.zip
and a 3DS version for anyone with Celestia v 1.3.1 or earlier, this one is here

I managed to convert the Max Model by exporting to VRML from 3DSMAX6 and then using accutrans to convert the VRML to 3DS. This method seems to avoid the object misalignments when exporting direct to 3DS from 3DStudio. You can download the model (2.8MB) from

http://homepage.eircom.net/~jim1daly/aces/hst.ace

All surfaces are detached by material so it just needs texturing. The 3DS file is approx 11MB. (accutrans produces very slim 3DS files)

Can anyone answer this to me? Why I see nothing when I open it?

BTW: what is CMOS??

ElPelado,

Sorry, I don't know why you're having trouble seeing the model when using 3DSMax R3.

CMOS = Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor, a type of transistor design used in many types of integrated circuits ;)

CMOD = Celestia MODel, a type of 3D model that Chris defined for Celestia v1.3.2 (and later) that's optimized for use by 3D graphics cards. Models defined using it can be drawn about 1.5x as fast as models defined using 3DS format. It's described in the comments in Celestia's source code. I've extracted those comments and included them in my "cryptic notes file" at http://www.lns.cornell.edu/~seb/celestia/celestia_notes.html#14.0

Hello Jestr, unbeliveable indeed, it's difficult to say what I'm seeing on the screen is not a photo but a model. :D :D :D
Just a little cent: I think that the tube interior and the mirror are a bit too "clear", so I modified slightly the scdkgrar.jpg mirror file, and here is the result: 8O
Before change:
Image
After change:
Image
What do you think on this?
Moreover I modified scpurp.jpg too, because I was thinking it could be the tube interior texture, but no result. :?
Can you please say me what is the tube interior file?
By and thank you very much!

---Added later---
I found it, it's the scdkgra.jpg file
Now the tube interior is black! :D

Wow...nice work Jestr...all we need is a super detailed shuttle model to go with it...here we go again!

We have very nice models in the Orbiter comunity... maybe someone can contact the creator and use it here?

Selden, I know what CMOS means, I studyed electronics 1 and a half years, and I think because of that I wrote CMOS instead of CMOD. So thanks for teh CMOD explanation! :)

Hi Andrea looks nice like this, yeah I tried to make the textures as close to the images around of Hubble but there was no way to get it shinier and I didnt see any picture of the tube.As the model has a variety of different textures applied to it now it is easy for anyone to change the appearance of the different bits (as you have done).I think the scpurp.jpg is only applied to the 2 High Gain Antennae-I thought it was a strange colour for these but looking through some close ups of the damage to them from micro-meteorites,I think they should have a more intense purple-red colour, but I couldnt bring myself to do this to the model.El Pelado -do what you like with it if you want to use it in Orbiter-go ahead,I got it originally from the site mentioned by Chris in a post above-I think it was a Nasa site so I cant see there being any problems.Bh,I think your shuttles look marvelous as they are. Thanks again for everyones encouragement,Jestr

Jestr,

Could you make the text version of the CMOD model available, too?

Thanks.

Hi Selden,I can of course, but I think it ran out at about 120Mb in size,so it will take a while to upload,a quicker solution would be to convert it yourself from the 3DS version on the Motherlode site. This is all I would do anyway-so I guess it would be the same.Jestr

Jestr,

You mentioned
there was no way to get it shinier
.

Did you try adding specular reflection to the material definitions in the CMOD model?

Inserting " specular 1 1 1 specpower 10 " just before every "end_material" should create highlights on everything. That might make it look more metallic.

(There's a little button in the middle of the mirror that seems to have high specularity already.)

Hello Jestr, I wish to make clear the reason of my change to your model.
I'm amateur astronomer from the early 50's (yes, I'm 60), so for many years one of my effords in telescope building has gone to obtain the telescope tube interiors as dull black as possible.
Obviously NASA had the same problem (but solved with a bit more efficiency, I'm sure- and a bit more dollars, moreover), so that their HST black interior is "truly" black, and moreover I'm sure that internally there are a lot of diaphragms, that allow only the wished light to enter, no stray light at all.
These diaphragms probably are located as follows:

Image

Their number may be much higher than 4 (in one of my little refractor telescopes -a 5 inch, but very well done- there were 7 diaphragms, each of then a bit smaller than the previous one). 8O
Hope this makes things clear: believe me, I'm truly appreciating your work. :D
And to give more evidence of this, here is a close-up of the arm of the HST solar panel, even nuts and bolts are there. Unbelievable! 8O 8O 8O

Image

The image is 1600x1200 32 bit.
Thank you again, Jestr.

No Selden,I havent tried editing the text file (I will do though),of course I can apply all manner of maps and specular properties in Max (very few of which get exported or cant be translated in Celestia though) and although it is possible to get objects which have a flat colour applied to shine nicely (like the mirror/lens in the tube you mentioned)when an image texture is applied it only has a low shine no matter how high I set the levels in Max.
Andrea, black sounds like a good plan-any idea what these diaphragms might look like?or better yet does anyone know of any good photos of them?Cheers for your help Jestr

That looks... Magnificent. It does not look like a model at all - it looks real. Great work, jestr!

Jestr, I have found this link,

http://pao.gsfc.nasa.gov/gsfc/service/gallery/fact_sheets/spacesci/hst3-01/hubble_space_telescope_systems.htm

with some interesting information, like the side section of the HST tube,

Image

with the diaphragms positions:
"Internally the shield has 10 light baffles, painted flat black to suppress stray light", and the secondary mirror position (actually missing) and drawing.
Moreover many other drawings/information. 8)
There are two concentric tubes, the ineer one contains the optics.
The mirror has a big hole in the center, to allow light crossing to the instrument bay, back of the mirror. 8O
"The aperture door .... outside is covered with solar-reflecting material, and the inside is painted black to absorb stray light".
It's an official site, so these should be affordable data .
Hope this can help you.

What I ment is that we have very good SHUTTLE models and maybe we can use them in Celestia too...

I agree, we need a better shuttle.

The one available for Celestia is too crude for my taste.

ElPelado, is this a 3ds model ? It should work in Celestia, isn't ?

This model appears to be very nice. I want it in Celestia.
