Apollo 11 - 35th anniversary special

Post #1by TERRIER » 21.07.2004, 20:58

Hello folks,

Seem as yesterday (20th July EDT !!!) was the 35th anniversary of the first moonlanding, I thought I'd give Shrox's fantastic Apollo 11 model a slight tweak, to show it's different appearances while it was orbiting the moon, on that historic ocassion.

The results are as follows;

FULL APOLLO 11 MODULE-This is identical to Shrox's model except that I've improved the antenna dishes so they don't disappear when viewing them from certain directions like they did before.
Image

APOLLO 11 COMMAND AND SERVICE MODULE ONLY

APOLLO 11 CSM and ASCENT MODULE

All 3 models are available with the appropriate .ssc file to display them (at the correct times) at the following;

http://terriercelestia.sphosting.com/Apollo_11.zip (1.7MB zipped)

regards,
TERRIER

Hello Cham, it works, but you have to right click and "save object with name". :wink:
Try it! 8)

No joy here either. "Access to Sphosting.com has been disabled" :(

EDIT >> OK, seems that Firefox would only download a copy of the error page (as a zip file) but IE downloads the zip properly. You learn something everyday, huh? To the Moon with me! :?

Sorry if there's been any inconvenience with the link, it works alright for me :lol:

I've uploaded it to the motherlode site so hopefully it'll be available on there shortly.

By the way, when you look through the Apollo windows, you can see the stars field. There's an invisibility problem inside the lunar model too.

I suggest to give all the windows an opaque and shiny aspect.

Great stuff TERRIER...there is another excellent Apollo CSM/Service module by jroberts and I've been using this with Doug Gann's Lem model...Textured by Jim...I think...seek and ye shall find...I may post some screenies later, but TERRIER'S ssc's should also work with these models...
They are very detailed so get ready for that upgrade! Doh!

Regards...bh.

Firstly, the link to my index page may prove to be better for non-IE browser users; (Just look for the link for Apollo_11.zip)

I've not seen the other CSM model, any idea of the link ?

By all means do. :D

I have the Lunar module model from Jims site, which can be found at;
http://home.arcor.de/jimpage/files/apollo11.zip

I also have a model of the remains of the lander, that is available from Jack Higgins' site;
http://homepage.eircom.net/~jackhiggins ... cmodel.zip

I've got some .ssc settings which will display these using the LongLat command;

Code: Select all

 "Lunar Module" "Sol/Earth/Moon"

{
   Class "spacecraft"
   Mesh "lander.3ds"
   Radius  0.010
   Beginning 2440423.3456
   Ending 2440424.24584

   LongLat [ 23.47297 0.67408 0 ]

   Orientation [ 27.5 0 1 0 ]

        Albedo              0.10
}

"Lunar Module (Remains)" "Sol/Earth/Moon"

{
   Class "spacecraft"
   Mesh "apolloLM_desc.3ds"
   Radius  0.006
   Beginning 2440424.24584

   LongLat [ 23.47297 0.67408 0 ]

   Orientation [ 27.5 0 1 0 ]

        Albedo              0.10
}

Now all we need is a model of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, then the moonlanding mission will be just about complete :lol:

TERRIER

Ya, that's what I wanted to suggest: there are lots of nicely detailled parts of Apollo Spacecrafts modeled for Orbiter. It will be interresting to adapt some of the textures for Celestia. Do you want I search some shots (and links to dwld the models?) to show what I mean? Jeam

I've only just noticed a slight problem, or should I say "inconvenience" that is caused by one of my .ssc definitions for this add-on.

The part of the .ssc which defines the CSM and Ascent module needs to be changed to the following;

Code: Select all

"Apollo 11 CSM & Ascent" "Sol/Earth/Moon"
{
Class "spacecraft"
Mesh "apolloCSM_ascent.3ds"
Radius 0.010
Beginning 2440424.24584  # Ascent Docking 17:54:01 UTC 21-Jul-1969
Ending 2440424.48681  # Ascent Jettison 23:41 UTC 21-Jul-1969

EllipticalOrbit
{
Period 0.0873
SemiMajorAxis 1922
Eccentricity 0.00078
Inclination 5
}
Albedo      0.10
}

Previously I had named it "Apollo 11 CSM/Ascent" "Sol/Earth/Moon"

The "/" in the name causes problems when using Celestia's internal search function (Return:Starting letter of your desired object:Tab Key:Return), when looking for objects beginning with "A" :oops: .

I have uploaded a new zip file to my website, and will do the same for the motherlode.

Cheers,
TERRIER
