Hi all,

I build a 3DS model of Rosetta from pictures found on CNES and ESA web site.
I don't know if this model is right, but it looks fine.

I use Wings3D http://www.wings3d.com to model it (a small and powerfull 3D modeler).

Well spotted! It's because Mars Express inherited a lot of design from the Rosetta mission. Venus Express does the same. The reason is that ESA wanted to reduce mission time and expense, so it started these 'express' missions. Read more at ESA Article "Rosetta's Christmas present to Mars Express", 25 Dec 2000. Maybe the commonality can be used to check/improve models.

There's something I don't understand about the size of Rosetta (the new model is very nice, by the way). In Celestia, it says it has a 34 meters radius. Is it really that big ? 64 meters lenght ? On this web site :

it says it has about 32 meters diameter. Is there an error somewhere ?

Maybe I'm misinterpretting the numbers, but it says the solar array is 32m, not the whole craft. Well, it has 2 solar arrays, plus a ~2m body. Which would put it in the range of 64m, actually it would be more like 66m.

Each solar panel is only 14m long, so "32 metres tip to tip" must refer to the total width of panels + spacecraft, allowing for the width of the spacecraft body and the attachment struts for the panels. So a radius of 16m would be correct.

Guest, any chance you'd consider modifying this model to also create a Mars Express model? As this post explains, it seems the Mars Express model is missing. Since it does seem that the models are very similar, perhaps you'd be able to modify yours to try and create that model as well?
