PX-317, June 14th (Another Apocalypse Asteroid?)

Post #1by -Shadow- » 30.05.2004, 23:49

Hi! i haven't posted here in a very long time, and I found something to post about 20 minutes ago...

http://www.angelfire.com/extreme4/june14/

http://www.edmphreak.tk/

Those two websites have some info about it. I heard about it from a friend. I think It's a lie, but I'm still not 100% sure. I wanted to know what your opinions are on this....

It's nonsense. They can't even spell "asteroid".

I heard about that. It's supposed to be a disproved rumor, but I'm checking space.com now just to be safe.

from the website...

As of today [May 30th], people on the west coast of Canada, (there have been confirmed reports from the Langly, Vancouver and Victoria areas), have begun to stock pile provisions and build extensive under ground shelters.

Really? I haven't seen anyone digging shelters around here... not that this would do any good anyway.

And yeah, the website does seem to be very very wrong (and crap). "Titanium asteroid", indeed. :rolleyes:

Still, if it is true I'm going to get a nice view of it from here. I always wanted to go out with an asteroid strike :D

Though a check on the IAU NEO page says that asteroid 1993 KH will be making a close approach to Earth on June 14th. Which, clearly, was not discovered in 2003.

1993 KH 2453170.54 2004 June 14.04 0.1315 6 oppositions, 1993-2004 E2004-J18 1993 KH

But that'll only get as close as 0.1315 AU. And doesn't sound anything like PX-317, which AFAIK isn't the sort of name or classification that asteroids are given anyway. There are some ephemerides for it here if anyone fancies dropping it into Celestia :).

Doctor Evil; if there was an incoming asteroid, why couldn't you just fire your (*air quotes) "laser"?

You may want to check my name again. If I could shoot every person who called me Doctor Evil instead of Evil Doctor, I'd be standing on a pile of bodies a mile high... :twisted: :wink: Stupid Austin Powers films...! :x

Back on topic... the Epoch value on the ephemerides on the NeoDys website is a bit odd, it claims the julian date is 53200. I thought julian dates were supposed to be 2 million and something though? I've got the following code for 1993 KH but don't have a clue what to put in as the Epoch:

Code: Select all

"1993KH" "Sol"
{
   Class "asteroid"
   Texture "asteroid.png"
   Mesh "roughsphere.cms"
   Radius 0.7
   Albedo 0.05

   EllipticalOrbit
   {
   Epoch         ?????
   Period         500.57
   SemiMajorAxis      1.2338
   Eccentricity      0.311248
   Inclination         12.805
   AscendingNode      54.48
   ArgOfPericenter      293.682
   MeanAnomaly      331.624
   }
}

Any ideas?

Oh Evil One,

NeoDys uses "Modified Julian Dates": add 2400000.5 to get the full value.

If there really was a "brown dwarf" or other cosmic fragment coming our way someone would know about it....Now the question is would they tell us?

The answer is NO...

Why? well if your government official were to reveal that the world was going to end what do you think would happen...In order to keep the peace they would try thier damnest to stop the inevitable before having to reveal it to the public...but obviously sooner or later we would learn of its existance...so really it doesnt matter one way or the other...If the world is going to end, well then its going to end...Oh well...

I just rather not know about it...
I'm trying to teach the cavemen how to play scrabble, its uphill work. The only word they know is Uhh and they dont know how to spell it!

I doubt that "they" could hide it from us since "they" don't control all the telescopes in the world. Observatories under the control of other countries, as well as countless amateurs would have discovered a brown dwarf on a collision course by now.

Also, even if it were the government's secret to keep, that's just not how government works. They'll cover up things that are an embarassment to themselves, but any politician in the know would run his re-election campaign on "Getting the truth out".

If something were discovered that was destined to hit Earth, its doubtful that they'd have the impact location pinpointed right away. It wouldn't even be a point, but an oval. At first a large one that contained Earth and the space around it. Then as the days and weeks went by, the oval would get more and more precise until they concluded that an impact with the planet was inevitable. Then ultimately they'd get a good idea of the impact location.

NEWS UPDATE! June 3rd, 2004
The first of many?

Last night an asteroid broke the earths atmosphere some where near Vancouver/Victoria, and was claimed to be the size of a large microwave.
One can only speculate as to why such a large 'roid was able to break our atmosphere so intact. I talked with *name removed upon request* at the odyssium again on this matter. "It's wierd, PX 317 is GONE, it's not where it should be, nor is it anywhere else. There does how ever appear to be a large amount of debris where the asteroid used to be, some of the chunks appear to be the size of a car, perhaps it was destroyed in secrecy by the United States Air Defence system. NORAD was modified a while ago for the United States "stawars" program so it is entirely possible." With such a happening, with the end so near, I'm sure even the skeptics will believe now. It is happening people. That which many have fortold and been wrong about in the past, is now fast becoming a reality. Get away from the coast, far away.
