problems with windowed mode

I had been using celestia under Windows 98 and a slow processor. I upgraded the processor and it worked like a chum, but when I changed the OS( 98 -> 2000(for a few days) -> XP) I got(and still get) error mesages whenever I try the full screen mode. Celestia crashes and the resolution changes for a few seconds before returning to normal.

What could be the problem and how do I rectify it?
