[another one] website for Celestia, p2p oriented

Post #1by Psykotik » 19.02.2004, 00:20

http://celestia.myftp.org

Well, I was waiting on my new connexion to make this announcement of birth ;-)

I've tried to make a website for the bests (IMHO) addons, textures, tools, etc. That's a lot of work, it's not (still) complete, some people will hate me to haven't included their work.

Since most addons are really big (think about the VT) and cannot be handled by my homesite, have decided to put them on emule, the p2p program. Almost all plugins are available by this way, and I prefer if people download it using p2p. In fact, it's the best for everyone.

Let me know what you think about the site, knowing it's written in french. Have fun !

PS : don't be rude with the navigation bar, it's some nostalgia I can't get through
-------------------------------------

PPS : Jeam, j'attends depuis longtemps tes commentaires, bordel !

Dear Psykotik,

Went to your site and had a look around. Nice...

Just thought I'd point out an error in the setup though. :?:

You have the SaturnTour.zip file listed twice on your script page, when I think you meant to place the MarsTour.zip under the second link?
Also, the SaturnTour has been updated. You can get the latest version here.

Since I don't speak French, I could be completely wrong, so please forgive me if this is the case.

Take care, Bob

Salut Psykotyk,

Hello Psykotyk, It's a nice stuff: I will send private comments for some little details... Two things, however: 1) It seems to me that to quote the authors of addons would be welcome 2) That would be cool if your site made avaible some addons today not easily findable (not precise example, but by exploring my catalogue I discover some rather often: if you see some I can send the files) Jeam

Bob : thank you, I didn't noticed these problems. You were totally right, according Mars is written exactly the same in french, and Saturn take a "e" at end  BTW, updated.

Jeam : ahhhhhhh, enfin de tes nouvelles. I'll reply in english, sorry.
1) Almost all authors (well, I think all authors today) write their comments in a readme file. I don't remove it, but I don't think it would be necessary to credit further.
2) Well, exhaustiveness is more or less the point of your site, but not for mine... i.e., I've very few spaceships, not all (by far) nebulas, etc. But thanks for the proposal, I'll check your website.

I want for this site 2 things : use the p2p network, which is essential if we want that great textures/addons survive in the long run, and secondly, provide things I really liked. By chance, thirdly, but it is not online, a faq a little more "robust".

Fais-moi signe, copain, lorsque t'auras un peu moins de soucis ;-)

Hello folk,

The translation of my website is almost done (I mean the main sections are translated).

I've included the authors credits, as well changed a lot of things. For instance, you can see immediatley if you own the addon, clicking a binocular icon (if available).

It's not exactly what one could designate a "good english" website (many errors at this time), but I think it's quite understandable.

Let me know what you lack of, and what you think of that website.

---------------

Pas besoin de traduction en fran?ais, c'est pour anoncer que le site est dor?navant en anglais ;-)

Hi Psykotik,

I see that the very first dedicated Celestia Texture site, my "TextureFoundry",
http://www.shatters.net/~t00fri/texfoundry.php4
with ~116000 visits/downloads since July 26 2002, failed to make it into your "best list"

That's the course of time;-)...

It is quite allright with me.

Indeed, my site badly needs to be updated, since various of my textures --despite being very beautiful;-) --are still incorrectly orientated.

I am happy to see that the people to whom I tought the basics of image manipulation > 1 1/2 years ago, are at least well represented...

Geesh, I forgot grandpa website ;-)

Links section is still under development, since I would to find some original way to displays links. You're site will be included in the next update, as many others.

That's pretty amazing; you see them growing, you feed them, you stay nearby them when they have problems, and one day, they decide to leave home... ;-)

Dear Psykotik, I've seen you pages and I say you many thanks, it's a true "compendium" of Celestia add-ons. :D
But I have a problem, and probably other people have the same one:  what have I to do in order to be able to download with e-mule?
Can you please give some information on the matter?
Have I to install some software, or what else? :?:
Thanks a lot

Andrea :D

Hi Andrea, thanks for these kind words.

You should check the faq's. I explain how to use emule, where to download it, and so on.

In other words : you need a software, you can download here : http://www.emule-project.net/. There is some explanation on that site, and some more here : http://www.emule-help.com/.

To download a file, just click the mule icon; after the "cel" url, you'll get the "emule" url !

If you have any kind of problem, let me know.

Hello Psykotik, I've followed your suggestions, and just finished downloading from your web pages my first file with e-MULE. Wonderful! :D
I have seen anyhow that the downloading speed is very low (max 10 Kb/s, and only on 1 file of the 3 that I requested), but I received the message LOWIP, so this is due to the very poor settings I made (but I have just given a look to the help file, so hope that later on I will be able to obtain better results).
Meanwhile, thanks a lot fo both the web pages and your help, appreciated. :D

Hi Andrea, mi sembra che tutto va meglio ! I saw you get the highID, which is very important to have the maximum sources.

E-mule could be a very fast exchange way, if all downloaders play the game. It's very important to keep a few days, even a few weeks the downloaded file, since it will improve the speed, having many sources for the same file.

However, it's not the case; I'm too many times the only source... but it's seems like it's changing; I live in hope ;-)

Anyway, glad to see you appreciate my work.

Thank you my friend, and my compliments for your Italian!
Now that I'm in the group, up to now three other people downloaded Celestia files from my PC. :P
As we say in Italy "one hand washes the other one, and both wash the face!", meaning that collaboration is most important, and this is what we are trying to do. 8)
Thank you again

You exactly get the "sharing spirit" : collaboration is the key ;-)

Has someone more comments to share ? Since a lot of people came from this thread to visit my website, they have to have some opinion; some criticisms ?

Yes Psykotik, I have one: perhaps it could be useful to know the file dimension "before" e-mule connection.
Could you put it in your Web page? 8)
Thanks a lot :D

Hey Psy, this site is a wonderfull idea.

All we need now is a system for celestia that allows users to register on your site or something and keep track of all the updates someone already has and allow for a possibility to check for new updates, and eventually autoinstall. Because still, installing stuff, is a lot of work.

I'm downloading some files now, I'll be sharing those when I have them.

Maybe you could program something into your site so that other ppl can also add addons to your site, so you wouldn't have to bear the entire load of checking and updating all updates for celestia :)

Hi Redfish,

I was going to implement Andrea's request, when I read YOUR request : damn, it's very ambitious ! That's a huge work.

For now, the update track is made via the "index" page; if your browser accept cookies, since your second visit you can check if a new plugin has been released ("New plugins since your last visit").

But your suggestion is still better; I'm enthusiastic for your proposal.

I have to think about the way to implement it a bit more; I'll let you know how will go my progress.

BTW, I don't understand what you mean about an autoinstall. Please explain.

And for last, I don't think I'm going to add your suggestion for external update; I want to keep an eye on what I propose, since many time I change the addon, adding a new texture to the pack, changing the ssc file, and so on. Moreover, I don't want to be totally exhaustive; in exemple, I don't like billboards nebulas, and don't want to share them. Actually, I share only addons I really like, and that reaches an venerable amount of ~ 230 addons !

Anyway, thanks a lot for your relevant suggestions. It will help me a lot to improve my website !

Lol Psykotik,

when I opted for the idea I didn't mean you should start on that right away!

The autoinstall feature is something that has to be built into Celestia itself. The problem with these add-on is, that I were to come to your site for the first time, I'd see 230 add-ons. I could then download these add-ons. But installing them(extracting to the right directories, editing files etc etc) Will be very time consuming. So therefor my idea was that we need some sort of autoinstaller which downloads the update and installs it, so you only have to (re)start Celestia, and it will work. This would IMHO be ideal.

Too bad the download speed isn't ideal. I myself haven't been able to get a file completely, but I've been having problems with my downloading through p2p networks. But your idea for this site is the best solution IF there are more shares.

So keep up the good work, if you need someone testing or commenting about things, just pb me.

Hello Psykotik

Well I had been away for a while but I am back in the forum at last.
There is no need for a low-brainer like me to judge the quality of your site. It's very beatifull. I have downloaded e-mule but I haven't had the time to check it out yet. I presume it must be better than Kazaa.

I read the thread and what rredfish is proposing is really challenging.

I am planning to begin creating add-ons for Celestia myself so it would be nice to be able to send them to you for judgment. It would be even nicer to see them in your site one day (only if you think they are worth-it of course). I am not planing to make another site dedicated to Celestia since there are so many of them around and it started to become chaotic.

My first project will be the creation of 3D surface for Titan, the largest Saturnian Satelite. I am waiting for detailed elevation data from NASA, from the Cassini-Huyigens mission. Actually I don't have a clue as to how I am going to
1. Get the data when they are available
2. Use them in Anim8or to create the 3D surface.
Any ideas are more than welcome .

See you later
solaris
