... Then change- now!
If you've made a new addon, and are trying to show a few screenshots of it, they won't show up, and people will have to copy & paste the address themselves into their browser, which is time consuming, and a lot of people won't bother downloading from you because they never get to see the pics. (A lot of people just assume that the link is wrong, when they see a broken image)
A simple search on google reveals loads of other free web hosts, many of which are probably far better than Geocities, tripod, or any of the other "beginner" web hosts. A few of them are listed below. I haven't had a chance to try any of them out, so if you know of one that's not great, pm me or post it here, and i'll take it off the list:
http://www.50megs.com *rubbish, it seems
http://free.prohosting.com
http://www.freewebspace.net
http://www.bravenet.com
http://www.freeservers.com *Possibly doesn't allow outside linking
http://www.fortunecity.com
Feel free to post more below. I've seen too many people say "email me and i'll send you the file, I don't have webspace" - you have no excuse now!!
Even if you don't want to learn html (which is relatively easy anyway), you can write a simple text file with a list of the addresses of your files, and save it as index.html. People can then easily download your files whenever they want.
Hope this helps people out!!

I am not sure, but if I remember well, the free webspace option in freeservers does not allow to put pics in other places, like Geocities...

A way to circumvent remote linking limitations is to change your image file suffix to ".txt". The brower will still open it as a JPEG/GIF.
I chose Angelfire only for the reason that they used to let you choose between on-screen banner ads or pop-ups. I choose pop-ups because it wouldn't interfere with my site design and more and more people employ pop-up blockers. I guess they've gotten wise to this, because now they don't offer that option and I'm stuck with banners. I might as well change to another host so I at least don't have to have the shame of "angelfire" being in my URL.

That depends on the Mime-type the webserver sends with the data. If you don't have control over this configuration, changing the suffix will not work for standard-compliant browsers.

Even better is a master list of hundreds of free servers. Webhosts4free.com has a list of hundreds [about 300 [!]] of webhosts that you can look into.
Though I'm with Angelfire, the only minus about them right now is that they've got quite a few bugs right now with the free service. The bottom ad mysteriously appears right over the text of the page making it nearly impossible to read it. Click a link, then click a link that takes you back to that same page is your best bet.
High elevation is the best elevation; the higher, the better the view!
Just thought I'd bring these to your attention.
