Hi !

I tried to edit the Earth-Texture, i wanted to make it more blue and bigger, with the Hi-Res Texture of Open Universe, but when i open it in Paint shop pro, all i see is the water. Is there a way to make the other part of this texture visible, am i needing another programm, with wich i can open *png - files ?

I hope somebody will answer

You could go and get an alternate earth map and use that just fine...I got the same thing when I opened the PNG file using Adobe...
I'm trying to teach the cavemen how to play scrabble, its uphill work. The only word they know is Uhh and they dont know how to spell it!

The alpha channel of the earth PNG is used for a gloss map . . . The land pixels all have a glossiness of zero. This means a zero is stored in the alpha channel of the land pixels, rendering them all invisible.

I should mention that I had trouble editing the alpha channel of the Earth PNG in Photoshop. I ended up saving the gloss map and base texture as separate files and using a custom utility to combine them into a PNG.

for earth.png use ACDSee for clouds.png or other 32bit color/grayscale use PhotoShop

I'm the guy to talk with . . . I might be interested in including your code, but you need to give me some more details about what it does. Can you send me a screen shot or an animation?

I should mention that Celestia 1.2.2 will have a new Earth texture based on the new NASA map (http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsroom/BlueMarble/). There's also code to split this into multiple textures, so you should be able to view it at 2048x1024 resolution even on cards that limit the maximum texture size to something less (like the Matrox G400 and the Voodoo3)
