HD 28185 Is Finished!
I have finaly finished my HD 28185 system. After alot of delays and system trouble I just finished zipping it up and have started uploading it to my iDisk for eveyone to download. Check the readme fill inside for instructions. I don't think Bruckner will be able to host the file because of its size. Its 9.2megs zipped. I am not sure if Rassilon wants to still include this in his extrasloar project due to its size.
I have finaly posted the pictures I said I would. If you go to my iDisk at http://homepage.mac.com/donedwards/FileSharing.html and when the page is loaded look for the folder in the list named HD 28185 Pictures. Just click it and then a list of pictures will show up. Click the little eye icon for a thumbnail veiw or click the download arrow for the full size image. There have already been a few changes since I captured these pictures. The clouds on the earth like moons have been changed to the new clouds Rassilon put up for his new earth. I found that these clouds give a much better atmospheric look and even look like the atmosphere is diffusing blue light through nitrogen as it occurs on earth. Some of the pictures are of some other planets I am working on. Those will have the term unsed in the title. If anyone is interested in these I can make them available for download just be warned that some of them are still a little rough around the edges.
Heres the link for downloading HD 28185 System .zip

All comments on the work I have done are welcome and if anyone has an idea or two for some changes please feel free to tell me about them. Hope everyone enjoys this. Its been fun to make but also time consumming.

I posted this but for some reason it didn't post under my name and I was logged in at the time.
Rassilon please give me a heads up on what you think of my system pack!
HD 28185 Is Finished!
I can answer that one for you . When you download the HD 28185 system, just choose to save it to a section such as Program Files on your computer. Make sure that you have WinZip or some other unzipping excutable installed and running so you can use it to unzip the file. After you download "HD 28185", unzip it into your "Program Files/Shatters Software/Celestia" directory or wherever you saved your Celestia version. Open Celestia, press the ENTER key, type in HD 28185, press ENTER again, and press G on the keyboard to go to the system.
HD 28185 Installation
First some information about the system. I chose the HD 28185 system because it was the first system that was found to have a large gasgiant orbiting a Sol type star at a distance that equals earths from our sun. This would make it a good canidate for having moons that could be habitable. This gasgiant has a very stable nearly circular orbit unlike many of the other gasgiants that have been found.
Ok now to the instructions. I placed a readme file with instructions inside the zip. mark02 was partialy right on the instructions. But here are the more accurate ones. Unzip the file were you would normaly unzip files. Go to that location and look for a folder/directory called HD 28185 System. Inside you will find the .ssc file the readme file and another folder/directory called textures. First open the textures folder/directory and select all the the files and copy them to the Celestia/Textures/Medres folder/directory. Then copy the HD 28185.ssc file to you Celestia/Extras folder/directory. Now comes the more complex part. Open your extrasolar.ssc with wordpad and then select from the menu edit and then find. Type in HD 28185 and hit enter. This will scroll down to the HD 28185 entry. Now scroll down a litlle further and you will see the entry for "b" "HD 28185" now simply put a # sign infront of the line so it looks like this #"b" "HD 28185" now save the file. Now you can follow the rest of mark02 instructions and view the system. The alernate way is to choose from the Celestia menu Navigate/Star Browser. Inside the star browser look to the bottom and select with planets. Now scroll down the list of stars till you come to HD 28185. Select it and the click the Goto button. Celestia will navigate there and then you can start visiting the planets there I have made. Hope this helps. Evryone Enjoy!!!

Thanks
Thanks for the compliment. I hope you think the system was worth the waite.
I never thought of doing speculars on gasgiants until I saw it posted in here a few days ago. I will give that a try for the first texture update for HD 28185. I will also give it a try on the icy moons and planets.
I have found working with Gimp not to be so bad I just need to quit thinking Photoshop layout while using it. Actualy I have been using both
side by side with pretty good results. I just wish I could cut and paste between them.
Please feel free to use any of the textures I have in there being that I have used some of your cloud textures.
By the way, have you taken a look at the 7th or "Eta" moon of HD 28185B at a increased time speed. It has some whicked dust storms.
Thats why it has a east-ward smeared surface. It was an idea i got from some pictures a saw of Mars surface were the winds there have smeared darker dust particles around higher land formations.

Take a look at my solar system project and what I did with Saturn...That will give you an idea of what specturals can do given the right lighting and what not...
I liked the inner gas giants moons the best...though a very dark texture caught my eye in one of the outer gas giant moons...very nice...Also the yellow giant similar to Saturn almost looked as if it had a spectural to it...That one with such mapping would be nice to see

I'm trying to teach the cavemen how to play scrabble, its uphill work. The only word they know is Uhh and they dont know how to spell it!
About those textures!
I know the dark one your talking about. Would you believe its just the Triton texture with inverted colors. Cool ha!
I personaly call the yellow gasgiant you are talking about lemon marangue pie in a blender. It kind looks like that I think.
I will use it for my fist try at specular on a gas giant. It is a very bright texture.
I may implement adding more shepard moons to the third gasgiant, the one with rings like Uranus. Most of the outer moons textures are taken right form Celestia's built-ins but a few have been tweaked.
I am kind of thinking about what my next project may be. I think I may do a SciFi furture version of our solar system with things like Mars teraformed, Jupiter as a star as in Aurthur C. Clarks 2010.
What do you think of that?
I also am going to release the asteriod belt plugin for HD 28185. I just have to ajust some orbital speeds so the asteriods are spread out more. They tend to bunch up in clumps when Celestia first starts up.

Why not...go for it...
Do you know how to make new ring textures? Fool with making lines and using motion blur in photoshop...Make sure the texture is 1024 x 64 or it will not work...

RE: Rings
I haven't made any new ones from scratch. I just ajusted brightness and contrast on the ones in Celestia and did a little cutting and pasting. They turned out ok. I am looking forward to see if Chris can implement ring shadows on the planets that have them.
I wiil plan out the things I want to implemant in this future Sol system. I think I am going to check in a few books I have that kind of predict what the earth will look like in a few million years. The one I am thinking of shows Africa broken up at its rift valley, shows Australia, New Guine and most of the orient conected as massive land bridges. It also shows the southern part of California as an island on it way to Alaska, and South America conected to North America at Florida instead of Central America.
This should prove fun trying to create. I am going to watch 2010 again and see if I can get an idea of how big Jupiter was just before ignition.
Then theres melting of its moons ice. This should keep me busy I think. I will keep you posted as things progress.

Jupiter Clouds
I know it doesn't really belong in here but since I started this section what the heck. Check this out. http://homepage.mac.com/donald_edwards/ ... i-link.avi
I did a little mod on your solarsystem.ssc for Jupiter. Changed the direction the clouds rotate and sped them up. I set them to -2000 this way they rotate in oposite direction and it gives the look of the cloud bands moving in diferent directions. Of course the vid I captured was much faster that normal but it was to show the dramatic efects it creates.
It also shows were a few ghost artifacts in the clouds could use some smugging out so you don't see the same patterns move over each other.
If you look close at the lower cloud bands you will see what I am talking about. I think you nearly have the clouds down pat. I don't know why I didn't think of going this route. Just a little more tweaking and I think we may have a map for making other cloud layers for othe gasgiants. Keep working on it. I may give a hand at moding the clouds and sending you a copy to check out if you want.

Yeah thats a good idea...I managed to update the new jupiter tex I got from Nestler and made it into a spectural PNG with Fridgers clouds and the negitive cloud speed...I think we finally have a realistic looking Jupiter...
Just as soon as I get the whole system updated I will post a new download for it ...Expect it in the next few days...
Jupiter in lapse time...

Jupiter.AVI
What format did you create this avi in. I can't view it. I have divx codec installed but its not playing.
I use the latest DivX 5.02...Get it: http://www.divx.com

About Jupiter vid
Its looking better but I think you need to make the red spot not as transparent as it looks in the avi. If it were a little more opaqe I think it would look better. While you have been working on that I have quickly been putting together a teraformed mars. Her are 3 shots of the work so far.

This is over Valles Marineris. As you can see I have already got speculars going but I am not happy with the coastlines.
http://homepage.mac.com/donald_edwards/ ... g-link.jpg
This one shows Olympus Mons covered in snow. You can also see the other big volcanoes covered in snow as well.
http://homepage.mac.com/donald_edwards/ ... g-link.jpg
And this shows phobos in transit over Elysium Mons.
I still have a ways to go on this but its not bad for a few hours work.

RE: HD 28185
To Rassilon and anyone who might be able to. I am going to have to take down the HD 28185.zip due to Apples restrictions on bandwidth. If anyone can post the zip for others to download please be my guest or its going to dissapear for a while. I think I can get away with leaving it up a day or two more but then I am going to have to delete it from the folder. They emailed me so they mean bussiness.
THANX In advance.

I can put it in the add-ons section on shatters.net . . . Send it to claurel@shatters.net and I'll put it up tomorrow.

My bleeping mail server won't let me send it to you because of size limitations. Here is the url for file on me iDisk. http://homepage.mac.com/donald_edwards/ ... p-link.zip
This will probably be faster than email anyway.
Thanks agian
