That feature would be great for the paleo earth maps if the time range available in Celestia was extended further into the past and the future. It would be a nice idea to also have beginning and ending times for locations so that we could see when cities were founded or abandoned and label the features of the paleo earth maps.
Then we would need to be able to use two colors for locations, one for locations that currently exist and one for those that were destroyed or abandoned. Then there could be options to choose between viewing all locations, only those that currently exist or those that now exist plus those that used to exist.
Maybe we could associate mulitple locations to a label, each with a different time range so the labels could move with the features on the paleo earth maps.
Plus if the available time range in Celestia was extended far enough, then we could make the sun turning into a red giant and destroying planets part of the standard Celestia. Maybe we could try to do the same with other stars. Of course that would mean having begining and ending times for stars and being able to specifiy them in stc files.

If you are currently reworking scc and stc code, I might bring this to your humble attention again.

Having (in the meantime) quite a number of addons that make use of different textures for different time periods, it would be more straightline, having these textures limited by timeslots instead of doubling entire planet definitions.

Not exactly what you wanted as far as time (ie 5 billion years CE) but check this out. http://www.celestiamotherlode.net/educational.html, especially Activity 6 with a red giant phase of Sol complete with a dying Earth, Mars, Jupiter. :)
