Nighttexture 16k is much heavier than Nighttexture 8k?

I load the NightTexture8k.dds by Praesepe in my Celestia 1.3.1,in the RealisticEarth16k.dds,and with my configuration,my frame rate is around 55-60 fps.But when I try to load the 16k version,I barely can get 3-4 fps. It?s strange. Is the diference in night map from 8k to 16 k so huge?

As soon as it comes to the limit of your textures memory on your graphic card, rates gonna break down to about 1/10 of the full rate, because graphics have to be swapped.

The slowdowns depends on What graphic card you use and how much memory it has and also the filetype of the texture, huge 16k-32k single .jpg and .png textures are much demanding and slows down most systems.

if I remember right you have a FX 5700 with 128mb onboard memory.

you are already using a single 16k.dds texture for earth plus parhaps 4-8k cloud/normal/spec/night maps etc. so that would pretty much be the limit for smooth frames on a 128mb graphic card and would fit directly to its memory.

If your frames are dropping from 55-60 to 3-4fps when adding another 16k texture then its a sign that your vid-card has not have enough memory to fit it directly and are forced to use the slower AGP-Texturing/main system memory/Swap file insted.

if you want to use alot of 16-32k hires textures at the same time then you should give "virual textures" a shot.

maxim >> you where fast... it was "0" replys when I first typed the text above, that took me 20 min :), because of my bad grammer and spelling, so i always have to check twice before I write. it would be nice with "auto spell" checking on this forum for the aliens outside US/ENG/AUS ;)

I can only recommend to use Jens' 32k Nightlight Tiles. 32k is marvelous, notably if you use my 45000 city locations along with them!

And your frame rates will be up and well, once you use tiles!

Perhaps you should sneak in with Swedish first, then follow up your post in English later !

Believe me, it takes me 20 minutes sometimes, and I always have my dictionary at hand!

A "Video Memory Used / Video Memory Availible" indicator might be helpful. Perhaps displated along with the FPS info.

TERRIER>> I agree, its faster that way, to first finish the enire reply post in my language and then simply translate, I use a online dictionary all the time for some "hard" words or for spellchecking but not for translating the entire page.

I cheated a few years ago just to save some time =) and wrote a A4 page/reply i swedish then used the google online translate page or http://translation.langenberg.com to completely translate the page to english then I just cut&phated it to some forums without even taking some time to recheck it, my posts ended up very funny with messed up grammer, I saved my self many many hr's by doing so. to bad that most of the online dictionary's are to weak.
