for a 16k texture my latest virtualtex script should definitly not take much longer. The earlier version was far slower at the benefit of slightly more flexibility. Also it is crucial to use a very recent ImageMagick package, since the memory management for very large textures has been much improved according to the author.

Yesterday,your site didn?t appear to be working.There was 0 downloadable files.What?s happening?I have to download image magick,otherwise I can?t download the files?
