VT of Hawaiians Islands (Blue Marble DDS)

Post #1by kinderino » 23.02.2004, 23:19

Hi to all..

I pass some more time in making a new texture for the Blue Marble DDS (VT)..
It is about the Hawaiians Islands.. The 2 files are 2048x2048 and replace those
of level5 that are 512x512.. So you can close it to about 450km before any pixels begin to double..

Level4 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . <--------------------------------------------------------> . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Level5
Image

Because these tiles have much water color in it.. It take so less place inside a Zip file (only 160K),
that i don't mind to have a link here so you can download it directly:
http://www.megacom.net/~arkones/celesti ... hires-2048)-(tx_back)v2.zip
(Please note: this is Version 2)

P.S.: this the link to see the Hawaiian Islands photo that i use for the VT i just made..
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsro ... g_id=15304

P.S.2: Anyone have the time to insert or make a level9 or 10 of the photo of Honolulu..
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsro ... g_id=16343

Add-on of Mauna Kea area (telescopes) is ready.. (See a message below for a photo sample)

Nice day.. Jean-Pierre

I have an idea. Someone could create a map based an earth texture and have shaded areas to show areas had been covered by additions to the 32k earth virtual texture. Areas of the map could be selected and the color adjusted with a color code that has a color for each level of detail. This would be metadata for the earth virtual textures.
I'll try starting a map like that. It might be a good idea to have seperate images for each level of detail.

Jean-Pierre, very very nice indeed, thank you for your work. :D
I'm still unable to work on dds files, so I cannot help you with Hololulu, but my retirement is not so far away, so after that...why not! :P

It is for sure some works to insert a very close view of a town or area.. Photos are sometimes not in a good angle or even the original level5 texture was rework a little bit. Some picture can be fit just by doing 1 resizing. :? But some other, are not easy to fit since they have to be rotate, skew and curve.. I try 2 times to do the Honolulu area and i was not please with the result so i drop it.. Very tricky sometimes to fit a picture.. May be i don't have the patience, well.. i have enough to do the easy one for sure.. :)

As info, i saw a nice Rome area photo..

This one can be done easy but i might have problem with the colors..

Nice day.. J.P.

Hello J.P., I understand the difficulties with black and white or false colour (Rome!) images, but what do you think about the very very nice true color image of Venice, Italy, that I think everybody knows and loves, and that can be found here?
http://www.spaceimaging.com/gallery/default.htm#
It is a 2000x2000 pixel image, so with resolution very close to 2048x2048.
Would you be interested to give it a chance?
At the same Space Imaging address there are many many one-meter resolution color images taken by the IKONOS camera, of lovely places and towns worldwide, e.g. the Bora Bora Island, and so on.

Thank you. whatever will be your reply. :D

Yes so many great, real color and close shot photo at the Space Imaging web site..  Too close for me fo rmany of them..    But sure i know the web site for a long time..  I am not sure if the photo of Venise you have seen is the same as mine..  The one i have (and yes, i have try to do it for fun also) was too colorful for my taste..  I like to play with resizing, etc, but not so good with the coloring.. :)

http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/Newsro ... g_id=16314

Btw the photo on the earthobservatory is 3600x4200.. I am sure the one you have seen is better color.. Anyway, i can't do all the Earth in add-on even if i have some spare time but i will surely try some more later
since i do like to play with such nice photos.. But if the photo is too close, i can't or won't play with them.. :)

Thanks for the reply and nice day.. Jean-Pierre

I'm sorry but I don't. It doesn't seem to be posted at your web site http://membres.lycos.fr/arkones/celestia/ where the prior version was. Where is it actually availible from?

Hi.. My mistake, to forget telling it here.. I tell how to do it in my other messages about my New-York or Pyramids add-on.. I was thinking people have already read all my messages so i don't have to tell it again here.. :)

So  the only way to get any of my add-on that are bigger than 1 Meg.. Is to use ICQ or Yahoo messenger.. And when i am Online naturally.. :-) (Btw i don't send big file inside email)..

All the best.. J.P.

kinderino,

Get a website. You're wasting your time making addons if you have nowhere to post them online. List of hosts here:

Hi Jack.. Be sure that i have read your message weeks ago.. :)    For now i have already personal web sites on 3 different server and for sure i can't use them for those big Celestia's files of mine..   Until now i don't like so much some of those restrictions that some free server have..   For the monent, Yahoo and Icq suffice me enough since it is not a rush to get my files and this way, i can get faster personal comment..   Anyway, i do check time to time for a new personal web site and when i'll find one that have good bandwidth per month and normal characteristic, then i will be happy to tell it here..

P.S. i am still not sure of those copyright things in using any Nasa or Space Imaging images..   Sure they do tell to just add a credit line somewhere..   Well, i am not worry at all, but who knows.. :)

Thanks for the info.. Jean-Pierre
