Finally found the bug...

I finally found out in what way you lose the ability to left-drag the
mouse for a different view while retaining the same direction (i.e. so
you can watch the stars move past you or even behind you). I've been
trying to figure this out for a couple months.

Here's what you do:
1.Start Celestia fresh.
2. Optionally hit escape and then click in clear space to clear any
celestial body from being picked.
3. Hit F7 to move forward, and hit A key a few times so you are
apparently moving thru the stars.
4. Left-click-drag the mouse so it looks like you're looking out a side
window of an imaginary craft. The stars will sweep by your view (one of
my favorite things to do in Celestia).
5. Now, hit the left or right cursor keys (changes bank angle), and
suddenly you'll be moving forward!!! Then try to left-drag again to
change the apparent view, and you will immediately move forward in
that direction.

No matter what you do, once you hit cursor left or right, you LOSE the
ability to change views while continuing in the same direction!! You have
to restart Celestia to be able to do it again.

It took me months to figure this out. This is the precise directions to
replicate the problem. Maybe it can be fixed for the next 125 version.

Thanks - Vic

Vic, thanks to you precise description I was able to quickly reproduce the bug. It appears both under Windows /and/ in the latest CVS version of Linux.
As soon as I find some time, I'll look into it.

Vic's bug report may well serve as a good example of how such reports should look like...
(augmented with info on OS, graphics card, driver specs and Celestia version, of course!)

Actually, I have sent my OS, etc. many times before, but this time I
suspected this bug is not system specific.

Thanks - Vic

Gee, you could have found it so much sooner if you'd read this bug forum a little more closely...
