New, Extensive Tour of Jupiter Script
Hi all,
Since Chris gave us a new version of Celestia for Christmas, it's only fair that I add my two cents worth in the holiday spirit. Sheesh!
It's taken me a month to write this script, so I hope you people like it. You can download it directly from http://home.earthlink.net/~bobhegwood/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/JupiterTour.zip
or you can visit my site and get it there. The place is almost worth a visit now. The url is http://home.earthlink.net/~bobhegwood/
Have a look at both and let me know what you think.
Mr. Goyette? Lay off of me for a little while with this one willya? It wore me out. Whew!
Just kidding... Have at me.
Take care, Bob

Dear Bob, I've given an extensive look at the Jupiter tour, and I found it very, very nice. I changed the Galileian satellites textures in Celestia 1.3.1. using better resolution ones, in order to obtain the best from your script.
Only one suggestion: while I don't think that so many people can be interested in the Norse Gods, I think that it could be very interesting to show a couple of Galileian satellites shadows crossing Jupiter and/or, one satellite shadow crossing another satellite, as it happens every seven (? Not so sure of this) years, when there is a lot of Mutual Events (if you search for PHEMU you'll find everything you can need, including times etc.).
This is only a suggestion, naturally, the script is very beautiful as is, but I think that the shadows are a must for a Jupiter's show.
By and thank you.
Andrea

Great idea Andrea...
Unfortunately, I had *enough* trouble simply getting the script to work as it should.
Since there are so many different textures, systems, version of Celestia, etc. this can be a real chore.
I'll give it a try though, should make for a great final view of the system if I can get it set up correctly.
Thanks a lot for the comments.
Take care, Bob

Thank you Bob, I know that the scripting is a long and sometimes a very annoying work.
I have already translated all the print lines in Italian, and moreover I have modified the solsys_locs.ssc file, eliminating all the features that are not in the script, this to avoid the cluttering that's actually seen on the satellites.

I think that the great final with eclipses and shadows will be very nice (and interesting for the public).
By soon, and thank you for all your efforts (Saturn will be the next one?)

By the way,
I've now *revised* the script (1.03) to repair problems associated with Amalthea, to welcome the user to the correct orientation from anywhere in the universe, and to display the Planet from the sunlit side.
Take care, Bob

Bob (and others),
I'm sure you'll be glad to know that Celestia v1.3.1 now lets you put scripts in an Addon directory. The script directory save/restore bug was fixed. Scripts no longer need to be put into the root Celestia directory.
This means that you now can package your script and its associated SSCs and textures so that they are self-contained and require no modifications to any of Celestia's own files.
I can spell out the details in gory detail if you want. (I've gotta go do some grocery shopping now, so it'd be a couple of hours.)

Yes Selden, please, if you have time to do it.
It's a very good improvement, and I appreciate a lot the possibility to move the directory with .cel files and associated files from a Celestia version to another one.
Thank you very much.

Just to clarify this even more: you can run scripts from wherever you want. This includes your desktop and webpages (of course you don't run them directly off the web, but the browser downloads them into a temporary directory).

Hello Harry, I've just prepared icons for desktop connections to many .cel scripts that I use normally.
Well, it works, but with a problem: I have lost the memory of the display settings I chosed.
I mean, having chosen in the Celestia start the option to have 1024x768 graphics resolution, this remains every time I open Celestia from its default icon; but every time I open some script from its desktop icon, it opens in Windows Mode.
Naturally I have added to the icons start command line the
" --fullscreen (double space before -- because I have WIN XP)
as in the "main" celestia.exe command.
Some help, please?
Is it possible to maintain the resolution with the desktop start icons?
Thanks a lot.
Andrea

Windows keeps a list of known file-extensions (like .cel, .celx) and the program that should be run if you try to open them. I guess you would have to change the entry in that list and add the "--fullscreen" option there. As far as I remember this can be done using some menu-option in the Windows Explorer, but hopefully someone here can comment on the details - I don't run Windows right now
Harald
I managed to get it to work by using a shortcut to the Celestia EXE file, not a shortcut to the CEL script. Also, you don't need to put in double spaces. For example, this Target line works for me:
Code: Select all
"E:\Program Files\Celestia\celestia.exe" --fullscreen --url extras\Addons\JupiterTour\JupiterTour.cel
Selden
Creating a .CEL Addon
Here's how to structure a "cel" addon so that the script and
necessary files are kept together.
1. Create a folder for the Addon.
2. Put the script and all its catalog files into that folder.
3. Within the Addon folder, create the folder "textures"
4. Within the textures folder, create the folder "medres"
5. Put your textures into the medres folder.
6. Add readme.txt to explain how to run the script.
7. Create a Zip archive.
8. Post it on a Web site.
That's all there is to it.
The complication is in the contents of one of the catalog files
and the names of the textures.
As an example, I'll use Bob's Jupiter Tour script and textures.
1. Within Celestia's extras folder create the folder "JupiterTour"
(Note that I try to avoid spaces in all names. They require quoting.
Quoting does NOT always work. In particular, Celestia does not remove
the quotes. It just complains about invalid commands.)
2a. copy the existing Gipul.ssc, JupiterTour.cel, and jupmoons.ssc
into the folder JupiterTour
2b. Create an SSC file which defines the version of Jupiter
that is needed by the script:
This SSC file must specify Rings and a high contrast surface texture.
Copy the description of Jupiter that's in solarsys.ssc into this new
SSC and add the new features.
I deleted unnecessary lines in order to keep this example short.
I renamed the jupiter surface texture image to make sure that
it was unambiguous. This was so I could be sure that Celestia wouldn't
load the first jupiter.jpg it found -- the low contrast texture
that comes with the program.
Celestia will happily draw this new Jupiter on top of the Jupiter that's
specified in the original solarsys.ssc. You just have to make sure that
the diameter of this Jupiter is slightly larger than Celestia's version.
Note that the EllipticalOrbit definition is irrelevant:
Celestia uses the CustomOrbit if it has one.
This Jupiter needs to follow *exactly* the same CustomOrbit path
as Celestia's Jupiter follows
so that it always hides Celestia's version.
A minor problem is that you'll see Jupiter listed twice
in the Solar System browser.
I can't get too excited about that, but some people might.
Both take you to the same place.
3. Within the Addon folder, create the folder "textures"
4. Within the textures folder, create the folder "medres"
5. copy high-contrast-jupiter.jpg and JupiterRings.png into the folder medres.
Or instead you can create high resolution DDS files for them both.
6. Add readme.txt to explain how to install and run the script.
You might want to include something about how to create a desktop shortcut.
(See my previous post just above this one.)
You can't include one to be dragged to the desktop
because you can't be sure where Celestia will be.
7. Create a Zip archive which contains the folder JupiterTour,
not just the text files and textures directories.
8. Post it on a Web site.
9. Announce it to the Forum.
Here's a screenshot showing the directory layout and the files in them.

Selden,
Excellent...
Just one small quibble, though: Why in HELL didn't you guys make me aware of these features BEFORE I spent all that time trying to figure out how to make in work in Pre11?
Seriously though, this is a vast improvement. Thanks *very* much for the information.
Take care, Bob

Selden: Excellent description! Thank you.
Bob: It wasn't fixed until after pre11 and before final. In Windows, for .celx/Lua, it only works if the Celestia directory path does not contain any spaces, such as with "Program Files". However, a Registry mod fixes this.
I've been away from the PC for a couple days and will be away mostly until after the first of the year, so I will wait until then to download your latest masterpiece Bob. This gives you the week off too.

I tried with double spaces, but without results, the message is always the same.
I dont think that the problem depends because Celestia is in Programmi directory instead of Program Files directory, or not?
Any help?

Harry is correct.
I was in a hurry to go get lunch and forgot that.
Two other things to check:
1. There should be no " at the end of the line.
The quotes are needed only around the program path, and that is because you have spaces in it.
2. Make sure that the Shortcut field "Start In:" contains Celestia's location (without a trailing \)
For you that should be
"C:\Programmi\Celestia 1.3.1"
The quotes are required because you have a space in the name of the folder.
Putting it all together, your "Target:" should be
all on one line, and "Start in:" should be
I hope this helps!

Hooray Harry and Selden, IT WORKS!!!
It's absolutely a pleasure, and exactly what I was asking for, more than one year ago, do you remember?
I said that we would like that the school children could use a Touch Screen monitor, with big clear icons of the various Tours (the icons that are in my Celestia web page, by the way), to start the Tour they choose.
Now this is possible without the need to have on HD one Celestia program for each Tour, like it was up to now.
many, many, many thanks to you and to all the wonderful people involved in solving problems and making Celestia more and more enjoyable.
Thank you again, my friends.
