Virtual bumpmap ???

Post #1by Arcturus » 18.11.2003, 13:03

Hi,

Can a bumpmap be 'virtualized' ? I've made virtual textures of the 16K Marsmap, but cannot use a bumpmap higher than 4k; trying a 8k bumpmap doesn't work. So what should I to do to use the 8k bumpmap ? (I have a 1 GHz / 512 MB RAM, GF FX5200 with 64MB RAM).
Can a bumpmap be divided in virtual tiles and used by Celestia ?

Something maybe related : using the VT of Mars and zooming in, when Celestia changes from level 3 to level 4 it suddenly jumps from a few hunderd km above the surface to 10 km (even when hitting 'Home' only once) ! Anyone knows the reason for this ?

I know nothing about the creation of virtual textures. However, I can address the "sudden jump" problem.

I have found that using the mouse controls instead of the keyboard controls alleviates this problem. Shift + left mouse button+mouse up = move farther away. Shift + left mouse button + mouse down = move closer. Using the Ctrl key instead of the shift key affects the field of view instead of the distance.

There is still a long delay as Celestia loads new texture files at jumps in resolution, but for some reason there is no large change in distance from the observed object when Celestia is done loading.
