Virtual Texture vs usual textures

What?s the advantages of virtual textures?Something I thought about : it occupies less space,it is more realistic. Is it true?I would like to know because almost all new textures are being VT.
Additionally, what?s the diference between redmarsVT and flatmarsVT.Whose don?t work with normal maps?

Red Mars VT has shading to indicate height, but Flat mars has no shading.I'm still not sure about the normal map I made but if you try with the flat texture it looks right further out from the planet ,yours Jestr
