Howdy Mike,

billybob884 wrote:Hmm... I never saw it get that red, it only looked a little tinted pink.

We had the digital camera, a digital video camera, an old Monolux 700mm refractor (D=67mm), AND a pair of 7X to 15X binoculars -- ALL set up outside <smile>. So, we were ready for anything, since it was one of those absolutely crystal clear nights here. Personally, I prefer the binocs because of cataracts, but my wife gets a good view in the telescope.

Through the binoculars, the moon was not quite as "brilliant" as the digital camera saw it, with it's auto focus and auto shutter controls. Through the telescope, it was in between the digital camera and binocs.

The video camera was a bust because it's auto shutter speed was too fast. All it got was black and white, except when I switched it from "Nightshot 2" (Infrared) back to normal. Then, about half way through the transition back to normal, we can see the orange/red color. And this is (was) a $1,200 camcorder in 2000/2001. Oh well, it's ancient history these days <sigh>.

At some point this week, I hope to put together a time-lapse from the digital camera still photos. It will take quite some time, as the moon moved and had to be re-framed for every shot, so no two shots have the moon in the same spot in the frame.

If anyone would like to see a gallery full of amateur moon eclipse photos, check out http://spaceweather.com/eclipses/gallery_08nov03.html every day or so for the next couple of weeks. They add new pictures every day, and may even add some video or time-lapse too.

Ciao for now,

-Don G.
