Just Regestered

Post #1by Joe 12 Pack » 08.11.2003, 23:56

Hello! I found this site from Free Republic, and would like to download the Celestia-win32-1.3.0.exe.

I have read some of the posting here and like what I read. Y`all seem like real good folks here so I regestered. (Y`all, is Texas talk for you all)
I am not real computer litterate, nor can I spell real well, so forgive me if my questions seem a little ignorant.

But I have a couple questions first, if someone can help me. When I go to the download it ask some questions, like, Location and Continent, well I know what continent I live on, but on the location it lists several in the USA.

I live in centeral Texas, so should I select the one in Phoenix AZ?
What is the Mirror? It is preselected to none, should I use none?

I would like to get this done right the first time, any help would be helpfull.

Thank You.
I will put something here, if I can think of something intelegent to say.

Welome Joe! :D

Personally, I wouldn't bother with 1.3.0 - get 1.3.1pre11 instead! (It's a prerelease "beta" version of 1.3.1, but it's just as reliable & has many more features.) You can get it here... http://www.celestiaproject.net/celestia/files/ ... 1pre11.exe (12MB)

There aren't any mirrors for this particular file, but shatters.net is normally fine anyway.

You won't regret it!

( One pint too many, eh bh? )

Howdy Joe! Welcome to the world of Celestia.

Getting version 1.3.1 pre 11 is a good idea. It is real near to final release, which means it should not cause any problems on your computer, and does have some fun new features.

Hope you have lots of fun, and feel free to ask any questions you need to. Nothing to be embarrased about here. No such thing as an ignorant question -- only questions that are not asked. :)

Hope y'all have a great weekend Joe!

If you was to post a little about the power of the computer you have
we could point you in the right direction for some great upgrades

for new hi-res textures

Depending on the power of your video card
My very first port of call would be http://63.224.48.65/~impulse/Earth_Central/Earth_Central.html

to get one of the best Earth replacment textures OIMHO!

Welcome Joe 12 Pack! So, you're a weightlifter huh? Well, you're in the right state for a Celestia man ("The stars at night are big and bright,clap-clap-clap-clap........").
If you're worried about your spelling, just look for a post asking a specific question concerning a Black Hole. When you find it, you'll know which one I'm talking about. You'll come out feeling like Ralph Waldo Emerson!

Post Script: Don't worry about the mirror locations. Closer doesn't mean faster! Just pick one, if it works, then you're in business.

Jack, I will download the one you suggested.

Darkmiss, I have no idea what sound card I have, the only thing I know is I have a Dell 4500 with Windows XP home.

Tech! where did you get the idea I was a weight lifter? :) I guess liften those Bud Lights would qualify.
I will put something here, if I can think of something intelegent to say.

That's it! 12Oz at a time Joe!!!

As far as your sound card goes try this: Left click on the MY COMPUTER icon, when the dropdown menu appears-go to the bottom and click on PROPERTIES. A panel menu will appear, look for and click on HARDWARE.
When done, click on DEVICE MANAGER and look for Sound, Video and Game controller/or someting with the word SOUND in it and click to open the tree menu. In there, you should be able to find info on a sound card.
If you don't, then you have integrated sound Codecs installed.
My guess is that if you do have a sound card, judging by DELL, it's probably a Turtle Beach/Santa Cruz or some similar variation.

Hope this helps!:|

Tech, if I went to the right spot, it looks like I have SoundMAX digital audio. 8O Whatever that means.

I just got done downloading. 50 min 30 sec.

Now the fun begins, right after I grab a Bud.

Joe,
It sounds like you have integrated audio (that's not bad unless you need big screen sound), but to be sure, click on SoundMax and find/click on Properties. This should give you more detailed info.:|

Post Script: As far as your signature quote, what you already have sounds fine. How intelligent does mine sound "Hey guys, listen they're telling me..."

In space, no-one can hear you scream...

But in celestia, no-one hears anything at all- ever!

That's why it's your GRAPHICS card which is the important thing to look for in the system properties. Do as Tech Sgt. Chen said above, but instead of clicking the + next to Sound, Video and Game controller, click the one next to Display Adapters.

The name that pops up will tell you the name of your graphics card- having a high quality one of these is vital to viewing celestia with all the eye candy features! If you have an NVIDIA GeForce, that's the best, but an ATI card can work pretty well too if it's a recent version.

Hopefully it'll run ok for you anyway! :D

How about, 32mb ATI Rage 128 Ultra. :D If`n that ain`t it I just waisted 3 Buds looking for it. :P

So what do you think? Enough / Not enough? Im talking about the card, not the beer.

bh, what are those Daleks? I been watching Star Trex from when Capt. Kirk was a young pup, never seen any of those things.

Darkmiss! When I bought this thing it was supposed to have 256 mb ram, but when I checked in the system it showed 128. :x It has a 40 gb hard drive.

I just love these @#%*^ computers. So i`m going to say, Dell didnt shaft me and I have 256 or was it 258.
I will put something here, if I can think of something intelegent to say.

Joe...DELL are usually pretty good on their specs. If you've bought a system from them and it's not what you thought it was...they should put it right. I'm not a DELL owner but I know people who have bought their stuff. They should fix it for you.

Regards...bh.
