Changing Sun texture

Post #1by danielj » 25.10.2003, 22:05

Let?s get simpler.I want to change the texture of our star the Sun,but I didn?t know how to modify the solarsys.ssc.I have the texture gstar.jpg and don?t know how to use.
I search the topics,but I was unable to find.I think is something like this :
Sun "Sol".

Well, you can just replace the original gstar.jpg with the new one... It's in textures>medres. Make sure you back up the old one first though

Sun change texture

Post #3by danielj » 25.10.2003, 23:36

There is a gstar.jpg(256X128) in lo res,and now I have a gstar.jpg(512X256) in the med res folder.But I think I have to change solarsys.ssc,otherwise it isn?t work.
I barely remember a topic about creating a new "planet",by putting Sun "Sol",but I am not finding this topic and I don?t know how to proceed.
If it helps,look to my solarsys.ssc :

See http://www.shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1694 for Calculus' work-around to alter the Sun's rotation axis, which also allows you to add a new texture.

I have an new and I feel much better texture for the sun. It superimposes a texture on top of the sun, rotating in exactly the same place and direction. It works like a charm. Here is the texture:

Image

You can download it from my website. It is called "gstarbig.jpg" Just right-click on the link and save it to your Medres folder inside the Textures Folder in Celestia.

Here is the ssc file that goes with it:

"Sun" "Sol"
{
Texture "gstarbig.jpg"
Emissive true
Radius 709000 #celestia Sol : 695705.371
Oblateness 0.009

EllipticalOrbit {
Period 1e10
SemiMajorAxis 1e-10
Eccentricity 0.00
Inclination 0.00
}

RotationPeriod 609.6
Obliquity 7.25
EquatorAscendingNode 75.62
}

Enjoy.

New Sol Texture

Post #6by HS » 27.10.2003, 00:38

Thanks very much for the new texture and especially for the ssc file that goes with it. I've been using both for some time and they work like a charm.

I'd like to point out, however, that by using the new ssc addition to the classic ssc file you will be changing the operation of the horizontal number keys on the top of the keyboard. After making the change to your ssc file the number 1 key will now take you to the Sun, the number 2 key will take you to Mercury, the number 3 key will take you to Venus, ..., the number 9 key will take you to Neptune, and the 0 key will take you to the Sun as it did originally. You will no longer be able to go to Pluto using one of the number keys. To go to Pluto you will have to use the menu or type in the name of the planet after hitting the Enter key.

I find this only happens if you paste the new Sun definition into solarsys.ssc as the first entry. If I add the definition as a separate ssc in the extras folder, I don't have this problem.

HS: Grant is correct. Simply use the add-on in the Extras folder. It will superimpose itself over the existing Sol texture. The only disadvantage I see is that when you click on the image, you will get the "Sun", not Sol. Right-clicking on it does not bring up a list of planets, since my Extras Sun has no planets associated with it. To get to the planets, you have to either use the number keys, or the Solar System Browser in the Navigation menu.

sun textures

Many thanks for your remarks. I've taken your suggestions and have placed the ssc file in the data folder. It now works like a charm and the keyboard numbers are now working as they did when I first downloaded Celestia.

I've been trying to download some of the activity files from fsgreg's site, but after downloading more than 80% of the files, and sometimes more and sometimes less, I get the message:

"The connection with the server was reset"

and the download ceases. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks again for your help.

The only disadvantage I see is that when you click on the image, you will get the "Sun", not Sol. Right-clicking on it does not bring up a list of planets, since my Extras Sun has no planets associated with it.

this can be fixed by:
Changing all of the items in the sollersystem to point to sun insted of sol, or chang the name from sun, to sol in your add-on
