If I log in once, it adds my name to the active users list, although I am not actually logged on. (As in, all options behave as they would under Guest)
If I log on again then I am properly logged on. Although I don't know which threads are knew because the settings are reset from the first log on.
Anyone know why?
Logging on to this forum
I've never had the problems people keep reporting.
My understanding is that the forum software requires you to have cookies enabled in a fairly generous way. I usually use Internet Explorer v6 with Privacy (cookie) security set to "Medium High".
Right now I'm trying out Mozilla Firebird v0.61, with cookies enabled "for originating site only", and that seems to be working fine, too.
I never select the "Log out" icon at the top of the screen. That may be relevant.

That's what I thought Seldon, but I've found it to be exactly the opposite for me!!!
I have the 'double' log in problem if my cookie settings are set at anything other than 'BLOCK ALL COOKIES' !!!!
'Block all Cookies' works for me at the first attempt, maybe something for bh to try !

hi,
If you dont like cookies but have to have them, then in I.E -privacy-advanced privacy settings -overide automatic handling- block first and third party cookies-allow session cookies, works for most sites. The option in the advanced settings -security to empty temporary files when browser is closed is good too for stopping build-up, Opera is good for options concerning cookies too.

Terrier,
You and chaos syndrom both use the term "login". I never see the login screen. When I point the browser to http://www.shatters.net/forum/, it always presents me with the list of the various forums. The lower-right icon at the top of the screen always offers me the option of "Log out", never "Log in". Of course, I usually access the forum at least once a day, which might be related...

I always go to the 'log in' screen, I've not enabled an automatic log in, perhaps I should!
At this moment I have my privacy settings for IE set at MEDIUM.
I have logged in and given my password. On the 'visitors to site' at the bottom of the main forum screen it is showing me TERRIER as a registered user, however in the top right hand corner of the screen it is still showing 'Log in'
which I will now press.....
PS
TERRIER not logged in.

.....and Hey Presto, here I am at the second attempt!
The top right hand corner of the screen is now correctly showing 'Log out [ TERRIER ]'

Terrier,
Yes, sorry: I did select the option "automatic login", so I'm sure that's part of it. I also told both IE and Firebird to "remember the password", but I think that only matters if you actually do get a login screen.
(There is another forum that I've been accessing which uses quite different forum software, not phpBB. I always get its login screen, but it has the username and password already filled in. Checking the "automatic login" box has never eliminated the login screen on that forum. They'are also more concerned about security there, so the auto-login feature might actually be disabled. I haven't asked.)
