131 Pre 10 texture problem

Post #1by Darkmiss » 18.09.2003, 00:25

Hello
I just fiished upgrading to the latest build (Pre 10)
and my saturn has got a sudden texture problem

Image

As you can see there is a nasty line down the middle
This was never there before ?
And the new rings i downloded from here recently ( but i cant rember who from )
displays a solid yellow.
but if i press "R" and change to my previouse ring texture i have in my lores folder, it looks fine.
both ring textures are in png format, and both worked fine with pre 6

and the vertical line was never there before ?

Darkmiss, I had exactly the same problem with Saturn globe and rings (including the line), but in pre9 build, and I solved it in the same way.
If this can help Chris... :D

Jens recently produced a new ring texture, so that might be what you're using.

Well, I can't deny it. I like the views;-)...Saturn at "Carnaval"!

Unfortunately, I always miss these great new experiences, since I never tend to use other people's textures, even if they are "default";-)

Howdy Darkmiss,

Did you first do an UNinstall of Celestia, then manually clean out the Celestia entries from the Registry, then rename the old Celestia directory, and finally install pre 10?

I did these steps and do not have a problem with Saturn like you show.

Celestia 1.3.1 pre 10 (100% distribution only)
Windows XP Pro SP1 1 GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro 128 MB

Thanks for the replys
but I have sinse solved the problem (that didn't exist in pre 6)

And indeed it was Jens new ring texture that had the problem.
Thanks for reminding me Grant.

I solved the problem by reducing the size of the texture
from 8192 x2 to 4096 x2
and all works fine again.

But as i said, this file worked perfectly in pre 6 ?

Cheers for the solution to viewing the new rings, I too had the same trouble when viewing using 1.3.1p9, I thought it was just the problem of my graphics card.

I tried reducing the texture size in only 1 of the dimensions 8192 to 4096 and so on, but never tought to reduce the other dimension down to 2!

Bah! Still not working right, it must be my crappy micro$oft picture editor. Time to find me a new free one.

TERRIER, I'll post you the edited version to you.
And hopfully Jens will update the texture for all.

If not I'll put on to my web site. (with Jens permission)

Paul

Whoo hoo, and thanks!

The texture you've sent me has worked... not the first one you sent at 4096, but instead the second one at 2048.

I wonder if this has anything to do with my open GL rendering capabilities only allowing maximum simultaneous textures of 2 and maximum size of 2048 ?

Perhaps this 2048 size texture for the new rings should be released in case others have a similar problem.

Hi all,

It seems that I should build a 4k and 2k version of my Jupiter rings. I will add this file to the zip.

Jim & Terrier, the real question here is why was this working before Pre10, and not now.

What changes was made to make this problem arrise, and why ?
