Feature Request: Keeping Data Files During Installation
When I want to install a new version of Celestia, the original data files always overwrite my modified versions. In order not to lose my modified .SSCs and other files, I have to copy them to another folder. What I would like to see is the installation program automatically back up your current files and then restore them(plus the additional data) back to the folder.
Celestia Update
Whenever an updated version of Celestia is available I install the new version in its own folder. I then make a copy of the new "celestia.exe" file (not a shortcut), alter the name of that celestia file to something like "celestia-win32-1,3,1pre10.exe" and I then place the exe file with the altered name into my original celestia folder. I can then run the new exe file with all my updates, new textures and add-ons. Some of the features in the newest version may be left behind, but its easier to do it this way.
Hope this tip proves useful.

HS,
You are not alone with this, I have minimised the work by avoiding any editing of the ssc etc.I have followed Seldens advice here http://www.lns.cornell.edu/~seb/celesti ... intro.html .It does seem a bit lengthy but saves muddle by it all being in one place. All the add-ons go in a new directory called addons in the default extras file. So for example my Blue marble addon is Celestia/extras/Addons/Sol Earth/(BlueMarble ssc)/textures/medres/(BlueMarble ctx)BlueMarble dds/levelsfolders. Same for models, I use the alternate surface(right click on planet) for high res. versions, grids etc, you may have to write an ssc in notebook to put in with the files as they are not all set up to do this. But you can have a few Ive got bathymetric, tectonic,Bluemarble, borders, grid locations for Earth.Favorites file can just be exported, and put back, so can data files. I think my next install will be without lores and maybe hires, as it can be done from the addons. Hope this may help, sorry if I'm stating the obvious.
