well I wanted to reply here simply because I've created some custom solar systems myself, but I use a spreadsheet (Excel) to do it, as far as I know there is always the Globular Cluster Generator and that does an OK job, but for making systems yourself I think it has to be done "by hand", that is like pen and paper. If anyone else knows of anything in development for creation/editing of solar systems I'd like to hear it.

Well, I also wanted to create such a program. I'm in the progress of gathering the information. I want to allow the the user to put the planets at any distance or peroid they want and then have the corresponding peroid or distance calculated. Maybe the program could display the range of disntances from a star where the temperature and the insolation would be in a certain range so that people could figure out where to put planets if they wanted it to have a certain amount of insolation.

I'm in the very early stages of developing a program to generate solar systems around stars, especially for Celestia. My plans include the ability to review and modify each body as it is created (if you want to, anyway).

It'll work on a Star-by-star basis (You put in the HIP number), and out the other end comes a solar system in Celestia's SSC format.

One of the easiest ways of doing this by hand is to use a solar system generator from a Role-playing game, such as GURPS Space, though the SSC format can be quite fiddly.

Watch this space.

Rassilons cluster generator can do this, it produces an ssc and a stc file which you can chop about to your liking.

I think that it might be a good idea for the program to be able to create html files that the info urls could link to. The html file could list properties of the body like the fact sheets and nine planets web sites do. Then it could be edited to add links to stuff about whatever or whoever lived on that planet and anything special about it. :D
