Normal Map for Moon

Post #1by alan_federman » 29.08.2003, 16:17

I am going to start working on a Moon normal map. I will use the USGS
LIDAR data set from the map-o-planet set. I think my resolution will by 4k by 2k as a first stab. - If this sa already been done - plese send me a private message so I don't re-invent the wheel - I just haven't seen a good nromal map for the moon in all the posts I've scanned.

Moon files

http://exp.arc.nasa.gov/downloads/celestia/textures/hires/

moonbump.jpg 2k moon bumpmap produced from LIDAR data
moonnorm.dds 2k moon normal map " " " "
moonnasa.dds 8k grey moon - Clementine data, less colorful, but more sceintifically accurate - has some missing data.

I will make higher resolution textures as time permits.

I notice a great deal of improvement in the rendered image using the normal maps, especially near the terminators.

Is there some real topography data around?
I found these Shaded topography files while searching...
