I have no compressor, codecs, showing up in the popup windows. Just the uncomressed one. No Indeo or any others.

If you haven't already, you should consider installing Windows Media Player 9b, which includes many codecs. Also, you might want to install the free version of Divx. Their codec is quite good.
If you already have installed both, then there is something seriously wrong with your system's registry. Celestia uses the list of codecs that have been registered with Windows.
Are you running Celestia from a non-privileged user account or from a privileged account? I don't think that should make a difference, but it might.

I have the free DivX "5.0.3 bundle" installed.
The only ad I see is a translucent DivX logo in the bottom right corner that goes away after a few seconds while Windows MediaPlayer is playing a clip recorded from Celestia. You don't have to use the DivX player for v5.0.3. I don't know what the current version of DivX (5.1) does.
FWIW, the MS proprietary "Windows Media Video" codec does an even better job of compressing than Divx. WMV is available from MS for OS X, but I don't know if it's available for Linux yet. (InterVideo is supposed to be doing the port.) Under XP you can use Windows Movie Maker to translate any other format into WMV. I don't see any name in Celestia's codec list that seems to correspond to WMV, but I might be overlooking it.

I know next to nothing about the registry -- just barely enough to be dangerous. I used regedit to search for "indeo" in everything: keys, values and data. It was found in many places, but two trees of folders seem suggestive.
One is
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ActiveMovie\devenum\{33D9A760-90C8-11D0-BD43-00A0C911CE86}
It has 19 folders. It looks like there's one for each of the codecs.
I found another at
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\ActiveMovie\devenum\{33D9A760-90C8-11D0-BD43-00A0C911CE86}
That one only has 15 folders.
Celestia lists 15 codecs on my system, although some of them don't work.
Can you find someting similar on your system?

Hi niels,
Try this...
* Start button
* Settings
* Control Panel
* System
* Hardware tab
* Device Manager button
* "+" button on Sound, Game and Video Controllers
* Double-click Video Codecs
In Device Status, if it does not say "This device is working properly.", you will need to troubleshoot this item.
If it does say this, then you can proceed to the next step...
* Click the Properties tab
This will list all of the video CODECs currently installed on your system. You can double-click each item to make sure the Status is "Driver is enabled and functioning properly". If it does not say this, you may need to click the Settings button and change some settings, or re-install the CODEC.
