An anonymous reader writes "The BBC reports that Russian scientists have announced plans to build a nuclear power station on Mars. They say that all the necessary technical drawings have now been completed, and all will be ready for the construction work to begin. The power plant should be up and running by 2030."

It'll never happen. They forgot to take into acount the most important thing in constructing any building. How much will it cost in site allowance for members of the ACME space construction company. Not to mention away from home allowance, health and safety reps, shop stewards, inductions, stop work meetings, union fee's, danger money, strikes.......
mrzee, :) You, no doubt, have been watching THE BIG DIG in boston, mass. In addition to the above mentioned by you, multiply by the sum by 500 to wet Don Kennedy’ beak. Or is that included in the union fee? Probably both. Also, add ten years minimum to the time frame for completion. Oh, did I mention that they need to redesign two-thirds of the project at a sum of . . .
Sorry I'm from Australia. My opinion at present is formed by the things I have personally seen over the last six or so years in the industry. Most noteably and recently a VERY UGLY building in the heart of Melbourne. I just scale the issues up and can't see any action happening except that behind the scenes where corruption is the norm. It's interesting to see that even on the other side of the planet the same things are happening.
Maybe we should just say we are going to build something on Mars and let these guys go for a tour first so they know what they are up against, maybe it should also have only enough fuel to get there....
Still I hope it does happen and hopefully in my life time, thats one event I'd really like to see.
