Pioneer and Voyager craft please!!!

Post #1by itec_man » 18.05.2002, 22:23

I think it would be very cool to be able to visit and track these interstellar craft (especially following them with accellerated time and see which systems they get close to - not sure if Celestia takes account of rotation of the Milky Way, gravity etc...) either way it would be nice!

Also, my 3 year old son and I would like to thank the creators and contributors of this wonderful program, which we have only just discovered... :D enabling non-mega rich ordinary folk to soar among the stars as virtual space tourists, in a small way you have fulfilled a lifelong ambition of mine and will fill my boy's head with wonder... the Open Source community Rocks! Keep up the superb work

I would love to help you Shrox - i.e. I've been wanting to model Soho,
which has that very interesting orbit between Earth and the Sun. I
actually found an excellent max model (but I lost the url for it - looking).

The problem is rent-paying - wish I had more time.

I have just been waiting for Celestia to make friends with my video card...
Yes, post a link and I'll look at it. Someone probably has the orbital info on it. Is this one you or someone you know made?

The model isn't really Voyager, kind of a composite of Voyager and Pioneer. I guess I will finish my probes, wonder when I will get to see them...

It's almost impossible to convert POV-Files to other formats, as a POV source is a program, not just geometrical data. It requires a complete parser to parse a POV file, and there is only one parser which can do this right now - this is POVRAY itself.

However, some guy wrote a patch for some version of POVRAY which added an option to output the compiled object tree from POVRAY to a file (http://www.tb-software.com/products.html). Unfortunately, there is still no converter which takes a POB-file and comverts it to 3DS....
