Venus change texture

Post #1by danielj » 09.08.2003, 19:47

I tried to substitute "venussurface.jpg" for a 2k texture "Venus.dds",but didn?t work.Instead,I had display problems with no surface appearing when I hit I key.How can I change the texture in Venus?

did you edit the solarsys.ssc to reflect the filename change ?

I must admit, you explanation was very vague.
I didnt know if what you said was the files themself or the entry in the ssc file.

where did you put the "venussurface.jpg" file ?

please copy and paste the entry for venus, from you ssc file and paste them here, so we can look for clues.

Look!
I tried to substitute the texture "venussurface.jpg" ,in the ssc entries,for a 2k "Venus.dds",but when I did,there were several display problems,either didn?t show the surfaces or didn?t show teh clouds.I tried to change clouds texture too,but without sucess

Texture "venussurface.jpg"
# BumpMap "venusbump.jpg"
HazeColor [ 0.5 0.35 0.2 ]
HazeDensity 0.35

You must have a Geforce 2 or better card to view dds textures. Some ATI ones will display them too.

In other words if you can't see specularity/bumpmaps/normalmaps you won't be able to see dds textures.

Updating your drivers is always a good plan too...

Look!
You still didn't tell us where you put the texture?

Anyway, if you are trying to use a dds texture
you didn't edit the ssc file to use it

you should change the texture entry from

Code: Select all

   Texture "venussurface.jpg"

To

Code: Select all

   Texture "venus.dds"

and make sure the venus.dds file is placed into the "textures/medres" folder.

Venus change texture

I did exactly as you said,but it didn?t work.When I put Venus.dds in place of venussurface.jpg,when I see the planet and pressed the key "I",appeared a second layer of clouds and no surface.
I had put "Venus.dds" in the med res textures directory.I don?t understand.It?s the only planet I have this problem.
Perhaps because I only see its surface if I hide the clouds?

Try and provide more information when reporting problems or bugs.

In the celestia menu go to about, then OpenGL info. Cut and paste that information to the forum.
Also your system specs, OS and the version of Celestia you are running.

Without this basic information many people will be reluctant to help you.

danielj-WAIT!!! Are you saying that you just can't see the surface when the clouds are turned on? Theres a simple explanation for that... Venus' cloud layer is opaque!! :roll: You don't seriously think a planet would have a surface in those colours, do you? The only reason it looks like that is because it was radar mapped, because we can't see through the clouds...

I may have misunderstood you but i'm pretty sure that's what you meant...

My ssc looked like this :

"Venus" "Sol"
{
#Texture "venussurface.jpg"
Texture "venus.dds"
# BumpMap "venusbump.jpg"
HazeColor [ 0.5 0.35 0.2 ]
HazeDensity 0.35
Radius 6052

Atmosphere {
Height 60
Lower [ 0.8 0.8 0.5 ]
Upper [ 0.6 0.6 0.6 ]
Sky [ 0.8 0.8 0.5 ]
CloudMap "venus.jpg"
CloudHeight 50
CloudSpeed 90
}

CustomOrbit "vsop87-venus"
EllipticalOrbit {
Period 0.6152
SemiMajorAxis 0.7233
Eccentricity 0.0068
Inclination 3.3947
AscendingNode 76.681
LongOfPericenter 131.533
MeanLongitude 181.979
}

RotationPeriod 5832.479839
Obliquity 178.78
EquatorAscendingNode 300.22
RotationOffset 137.45

Albedo 0.77
}

But the surface disappear and I have to go back to no Venus.dds texture.Is there a problem combining jpg and dds maps?If possible,send me a photo of this texture

Some people have Venus surface files for download, that just look like the venus clouds, because that is all that we can see of Venus.

maybe the file you downloaded was one of these files, so therfore you woudn't see the real suface. just two layers of clouds. ?

With the file "venussurface.jpg",I can see the surface when I toggle the clouds off.But it?s a 1 k texture.If "Venus.dds" is not a 2k equivalent of "venussurface.jpg",where I can download a 2k "version" of "venussurface.jpg" or "venusmap.jpg"?
