New Mars 4k, 8k And.... 16k, Textures available.
Thanks all you guys for the comments I'm just uploading the non-shaded 8k texture along with the normal map, when its done, I will post the link to the file
Here's another more texture.. this time I've finally been able to crunch the 16K shaded version but with the same colorimetry I used in the 8k non shaded.. just take a look:

Hey praesepe, please say you going to upload that 16 texture as well.
The colour on that is great.

Hey Praesepe, I've never seen before a Mars image so beautiful, real. convincent and detailed .
The colours are absolutely realistic , the overall appearance is astounding , the detail absolutely wonderful .
Thank you very, very, very for your work!

Your 16k Mars is not bad, not bad at all, infact I'll even go as far as saying......
TOTALLY AWSOME!
Dare I say it - this texture deserves a Beagle 2 lander!

Hope you don't mind praesepe?
But my 8k Texture and your 16k texture dont match now.
as you have rotated the 16k to its right position.
any chance you can extract an 8k texture from the 16k, to match it ?
I know your flat map is available, but my preference is the shaded version.
My machine refuses to do any work with a 16 texture,
cant extract, make or view one at that size.
But a 16k texture works like a charm in Celestia though

Evil Dr Ganymede,
That is because he used a pre-shaded texture. I have tried both of his Mars textures at both 8k and 16 and the results are not satisfactory for me. With his normalmap I am getting double shadows on Olympus Mons. I have to rotate mars around to make them fade out. Now I have tried his normalmap with the 16k shadow-less texture with good results. But you still can’t get to close or things get rather pixilated. A nice 16k normalmap would do the trick. But I can’t make one. Just not enough RAM. Oh well I will just stay above 4000km mark to keep things clean. But I can say this much for praesepe’s normalmap. It’s the first that gives proper elevation and detail to the totally flat-shadowsless 16k texture. My 8k normalmap is absolutely useless for this texture.
Here si a shot of the shadowless Space-Graphics Mars v.3 texture with praesepe’s normalmap.
Don.

Ah, never say never!!
Past texture releases, Hmm let me think about it
Thanks for your understanding.

Yeah... ideally you want a global albedo map, showing no topography at all (you'd want to compile that from zero-phase images), and then you want to put the topography over that as a normal map...
EDIT: ...and that's what you said you were doing anyway, d'oh!
Still looks a bit wrong though. The topography on Marineris looks enormous... any chance you could do an image showing marineris smack bang in the middle of the planet, directly underneath the sun?

Well this is about as good as I can come. There are no shadows in vallis but there are some off to the right.
Hope this gives you an idea of what this textue can be like. It would even be better with a 16k normalmap.

All this work going on, on Mars textures latley is very fitting.
Seen as Mars will be the closest it has ever been to Earth, in a very long time. (August 27th)
And the closest it will be for a very long time to come.
So Mars is going to be big in the headlines for a while.
This is the Month of Mars....

Ok, no problem, here's an 8k version of the same texture to complete the pack, it only lasts a 4k and 2k version :lol

Evil Dr Ganymede wrote:Those full globe views with Marineris look... strange to me. I think it's because Marineris is right at the sub solarpoint, but there are shadows on the walls. You shouldn't be able to see any topography at all if the sun is directly overhead.
As Don says, it's a preshaded texture, there's no real bump effect so shadows are always there.. light comes from 45? North and 45? East. There's a flat version too but it's a pity I cannot create a 16K normal map for it, (I've tried to, but with bad results )

Thanks Praesepe,
Downloaded.
What I do is I have and 8k version of Earth and Mars in my medres folder
so Celestia starts up useing the 8k textures.
and the 16k of each texture is in my hires folder so i can change to them when i want extra quality and depth.

star lion,
Most video cards can only handle 1 16k at a time. That means your main texture can be 16k and then the others can be 8k. Now if you have a 256mb VRAM video card I think you can use three but I think you will see quite a slow down in frame rates.
Don.
