Problem selecting an object with the mouse.

Hi,

in the manual of Celestia, to the section ' Selecting Object' is written:

' The simplest way to select an object is to point at it with your mouse and [left-click] on it. Try clicking on to star to select it. The information about Io is replaced with details about the star. '

well, me this I don't succeed in doing it, why?
simply it doesn't happen anything...

thanks for your help

"It works for me."

The cursor does have to be close enough to the object so that Celestia choses the correct one.

If you have a Nebula in the background, Celestia will tend to select that if the cursor is not close enough to the star you want.

Have you tried setting your Mouse preferences to use a different style of cursor? A cross-hair might be more helpful than the usual arrow. You might also consider using a magnifier utility.

OK, Selden,
I can understand that is selected a near or more important object of that I want,
but the problem is that doesn't select me really nothing!
instead, at times deselect the previously active object, and after the contextual menu doesn't work more.

Am I really the only one to have had this problem?
sigh!

Don't know really thing to do!
I would like to understand what the mechanism that allows the object selection.
Can be that the selection is reduced to a limited number of objects?
(es: ' Maximum stars displayed in list' of the window ' Star Browser'?)

thanks for the help

Another problem happens when you have Celestia's telescopic magnification turned up all the way: when the viewing angle is only a few seconds of arc. As best I can tell, single precision floating point roundoff errors cause selection and markers not to correspond to the image on the screen.

I don't speak of extreme conditions, doesn't work with a normal field of 25°...

I have noticed a thing:
it selects only sometimes a star if this is at center exactly of the screen, despite I makes click on any other part of the screen (not on center)

Thanks Selden for your interest, but must be really my system that doesn't work...

I have analyzed my precedent attentively hypothesis and I confirm the gotten results:

in my system if :
1) I move exactly a star or a planet to the center of the screen, (not an active object)
2) click on any part of the screen, (also a screen edge)
that object becomes active

I Don't understand because is only my problem!
Hardware defect?
Video card problem?

help me :(

Since it doesn't seem really to be a problem in Celestia...

You haven't said what graphics card you're using, what operating system you have or what version of the OpenGL drivers it has.

If you haven't already, you certainly should upgrade to the most recent graphics drivers available for your card. Please take a look at the "Prelimiary User's FAQ".

Hi gianfry.

I think I know what you mean. I have noticed that if you are too close to an object (not zoomed) then you can only select that object, especially stars.

If you are relatively close to a star you have to move a fairly large distance away before you can select other objects.

Hope this helps.
