New 8k colored Moon texture

Hi all,

I build a new moon map this time in 8k and colored. The most importent point is that now the ugly strips and other picture bugs are now removed :). This was a hard and boring job ;-).

Here are the shots:
( 8k Moon dxt1, no bump or specular map, no ambient light )

On the screen I'm sitting behind right now the greenish teint of the maria looks slightly oversaturated. In general it seems like a very nice job though.

bh, I will upload the 8k DDS (dxt1) texture. Does someone have an interest on a 2k JPG version?

Please, Jim,
for people with little memory and old graphic card, but like to see a little part of your great stuff run on their Celestia!

Hi all,

My Moon map is now availble.

http://www.celestiaproject.net/~jim/files/moon_2k_jpg.zip (932KB)
http://www.celestiaproject.net/~jim/files/moon_8k_dds.zip (14,6MB)

I recommend my little script to build 4k and 2k DDS files.

Moldy Moon?

I know the earth's atmosphere filters some, but is there really a
greenish tint looking at it from space?

Hi Vic,

I've tried to build a realistic colored Moon. Now the problem is that I have not found a lot of colored pictures about the Moon. And from those pictures seem every one different colored. I think on of the best is: http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA00404 . You can find also a bit green (brown).

Maybe that it's also a bit personal taste ;-).

Jens, I've just downloaded and installed this texture. I can't believe how much more realistic this looks compared to the Clementine Moon texture! Many thanks for a fantastic job. Now my hope is that somebody will make a normal/bump map for it... :)

Cheers,
Paul

I will see what I can do but there is no real bump data available. Now for the moment you can use a gray scaled version of the Moon map.

Jim
Beautiful work, Congratulation
BTW, For fun I tried to add the 4knormal map ( I don't remember from who??), that clearly enhances the crater walls, but that looks to me as "hollow" more that as bump. With the new "alternate texture" it is very easy to compare your map, alone, with the normal map or with the &k bumpmap.

I have noticed that the 3D viewing program (Deep Exploration) i use to look at models and DDS textures, has an option to creat Normal maps from any texture.

So i gave it a go, i changed the image to greyscale, then inverted the texture, and finally converted to a normal map

If you want to try this yourself, you can download a demo version of Deep Exploration
Here  http://www.righthemisphere.com/products/dexp/index.htm

The results do work, but are a bit fuzzy,
I supose its because it creating the normal from a texture not real data

Try it out, see what you think ?

here is the preview  Image

and here is the download  http://www.bt.homepage.btinternet.co.uk/images/Moon-Bump.jpg

Hi MB,

my old 4k moon normal map was build for Celestia v1.2.5. If you want use this with the current Celstia you must invert the red channel with an photo editor (Photoshop, PSP, Gimp, ...). But this map based not on a real bump map and this can you see.
