IT WORKS NOW!
maybe i wasn't so close to earth surface.
the city Buenos Aires(I was born there ) should be a little south-west from where it is now. I will rey to correct it and post here the correction.
Here is the correction:
what i still don't understand is why in north amrica are more names than in all the rest of the world.

ElPelado:
Clearly Buenos Aires is a pretty large city (I know it, too). So giving 4 digit coordinates requires a certain "precision" strategy:
usually, they refer to
"the major's toilet" location, of course;-)
Jokes aside...my coordinates usually refer to local astronomical observatories or standardized places for star occultations etc.
Just for comparison, I quote the precision coordinates of the authoritative "Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names Online" :
http://webapps.getty.edu/vow/TGNFullDisplay?find=Buenos+Aires&place=city&nation=&prev_page=1&english=Y&subjectid=7006287
Buenos Aires (inhabited place)
--------------------------------
Coordinates:
Lat: 34 40 00 S degrees minutes
Lat: -34.6667 decimal degrees
Long: 058 30 00 W degrees minutes
Long: -58.5000 decimal degrees

Don't worry, the list was compiled by North Americans, who sometimes tend to have peculiar views about the 'center of the world'...;-).

Argentina is divided in 23 provincies(like the states of united states). one of them is Buenos Aires, the bigger in argentina. but there is also a city called buenos aires(like washington and washington DC), the capital city, on the province of Buenos Aires. that city is not big. I was trying to put the citie where it really is. thats all.
about the quote that you put: what does it mean "Buenos Aires (inhabited place)"!!!
and about USA, i know what they think of thei country.
btw, where are you from?

Since Buenos Aires is a /huge/ city, you cannot simply give a 4 digit coordinate precision without specifying what spot in the city you are referring to. Right?
about the quote that you put: what does it mean "Buenos Aires (inhabited place)"!!!
Again, don't worry. "inhabited place" is not my invention. This is original Thesaurus output. Just have a look yourself.
When I enter "Hamburg" instead, Thesaurus answers:
Hamburg ("Old Europe"), hi hi...
and about USA, i know what they think of thei country.
btw, where are you from?
That's a good question... I suggest you just look to the left of my post, it should say where I am from. In case you are still in doubt;-), click my WEB site that you find in my profile etc.

Buenos Aires is said to have more than 12 million inhabitants and you say this is not huge?
Of course, it has to do with the original topic since 12 million people mean that the extent of the city is so large that specifying precision coordinates for it needs a specification of a particular spot in that city.

who the h**l told you that?? Argentina has 35 million people. and, as far as i know, in the city of Buenos Aires are no more than 4 million. I lived there and I know how many people live there. even in the whole province there are not 12 million.

Ok, I have looked it up in my encyclopedia in the bookshelf and also in the internet. But the disagreement is that you talk about the proper /city/ which also in my sources only has 3-4 million, while I was referring to "Greater Buenos Aires" that includes suburbian surroundings. It is consistently quoted to have over 11 million.
"Buenos Aires is one of the largest cities in the world, counting a total of eleven million inhabitants in both the city and its surroundings"
http://www.hilsberg.com/BuenosAires.htm
"Buenos Aires
The City
Buenos Aires is a great metropolis with 11 million inhabitants and one of the largest in the world. It is also one of the most elegant and busy cities in South America and is in some way the essence of the variety of the Argentinean."
http://www.eh.net/XIIICongress/cd/info.htm
In any case it's BIG...
My city Hamburg just has 2 million and is one of the biggest cities in Germany.

I agree with all the info you gave. the problem is that in the city buenos iares(not great buenos aires) there is also a very high density... so it means that is not so big for all that people.
so returning to celestia, what i wanted is to put the name "Buenos Aires" in the city.
I will try to find a map showing the capital cities of argentina and you will se...

Fridger, here you have a political map of Argentina.
And here the explanation: in the map you see all of the 23 "states"(they are not states, they are provinces, divisions) of Argentina. do you see where is written "Buenos Aires"? that shows the state called buenos aires. Do you see the red dot with a line that says "Capital Federal"? It shows the city buenos aires(the one with 3-4 million people). Great Buenos Aires is the "state" buenos iares minus the city of Buenos Aires.
Is it clear now?
So, I wanted to put the label on the point where is written "capital federal".

Good effort, but needs more towns and locations. You could try here:

I'm looking forward to seeing all 36000 locations mapped onto the Earth...
Cheers,
Paul

I knew there was this sort of list /somewhere/. Just did not find it. Should be no problem to work with Perl on it;-)
Thanks for telling...
... just downloaded the list:
-----------------------------
But there are only few /long-lat/ entries?? It's really not too useful without coordinates? Also we eventually need to know to what spots (in big cities) the coordinates are referring to ("major's toilet"?)
/Thesaurus/ has 4 digit coordinates, but I did not yet find out how to print out the whole list as text file...

Well, tonight, I inspected that location list UN/LOCODE 2003-1 by UNECE somewhat closer. They claim in the manual that 8300 of the 36000 locations if fact do have long-lat coordinates. So this is definitely more than what was in my list. I shall extract those locations by means of Perl on the coming weekend. However that list is sort of strange: big cities like Buenos Aires or Hamburg do not have coordinates ...
