"Wireframe mode" crash within atmospheres

Hi,
Celestia 1.3.1pre3 crashes with a fatal exception error when the user evokes the "Wireframe mode" command (Ctrl-W in Windows) after using the "Goto Surface" command (Ctrl-G in Windows). This appears to happen on any planet with a defined atmosphere in Celestia. This error does not occur when the target is a star.

This error appears to only be present in the Windows version of Celestia (1.3.1 pre 3). I have tested it in the linux version (1.3.0) and it appears to be fine.

(addendum)
I've narrowed it down to it being just the "Wireframe Mode". When in Wireframe Mode and moving the camera to within an atmosphere as defined by Celestia, the application crashes with a fatal exception error.

It does not matter how the camera entered the atmosphere so the "Goto Surface" command has nothing to do with this error. It is only one such way to enter an atmosphere.
(end addendum)

The system used when the error occured is a:
Pentium 4 1.6Ghz
512Mb SDRAM
Geforce 2 GTS/Pro w/32Mb DDR
Intel 845 Chipset motherboard
40GB HD
Windows XP SP1

It works fine for me too. I typed this sequence of commands:
double-click Celestia icon
3 (select earth)
Ctrl-G (land on earth)
Ctrl-W (turn on wireframe)

System:
512MB 2.4GHz P4; WinXP Pro SP1
32MB ATI Radeon 7000 AGP; CATALYST 03.4, OpenGL 1.3.3717
Celestia v1.3.1pre3

Jrobert, you don't say what version of the graphics drivers you're using. You can get that information from the "properties" window for your display:
right-mouse-button-click on the backdrop of your desktop window
select the menu item "Properties"
select the tab "Settings"
select the button "Advanced"
select the tab "Options" (this is for ati cards, I don't recall if it's the same for Nvidia)

The problem may only appear on certain hardware. I had all the OGL options in Celestia maxed out for the graphics card... pretty much, everything that Celestia and OGL could do with that card.

BTW, I'm using the latest detonator drivers Nvidia has available which should be v44.03 (released May 14, 2003)

The problem is definately hardware specific. I tested for this issue on an older system and the problem is non-existant...

The older systems configuration is:
P3 550Mhz
256MB SDRAM
Geforce2 MX w/32MB
Intel 440BX Chipset Motherboard
10 GB HD
Windows XP SP1

Basically a pathetically old system  But... it is using all current drivers... mainly the Nvidia 44.03 detonator drivers.

http://www.celestiaproject.net/celestia/files/ ... .1pre4.exe

I was going to wait until I had Don's Pluto texture, but what the hell . . . That'll be in 1.3.1pre5.

This version features AltSurfaces; I'll explain in more detail in a bit.

And if you're using my Nearby Stars add-on, when you upgrade to pre4 you should replace NearStars1 with NearStars2. See http://www.lns.cornell.edu/~seb/celestia/hutchison/nearstars.html for details.

I found that if I uncomment the IgnoreGLExtensions [ "GL_ARB_vertex_program" ] line in the celestia configuration file, the error goes away. If I re-comment the line, the error returns. Chris, I don't think I can be more specific than that!

BTW, the tested system is now using 1.3.1 pre 4 with the same results.
