Translators wanted

Post #1by Christophe » 09.06.2003, 13:24

Hello all,

This is the first step towards an internationalized Celestia.

For the time being this is only for the KDE version and only for the GUI part, but I think that using gettext could easily bring the same thing to the Windows and OSX versions. And all of this using the same message file.

Gettext is available for Win32 and of course for unices.

The message catalog is available here, it can be translated using KBabel or your favorite text editor (simply put the translation of the msgid lines on the msgstr lines). There are only 212 messages so it will take you a little over 1 hour to translate. The translation has already been done in French.

If you're willing to give some of your time, first post a message in this thread so that we don't have several people working on the same translation. Once you're done, you can e-mail me the translated file at chris@teyssier.org

The code will be commited to cvs soon once the remaining build problems with GTK are resolved.

I could help to translate to Spanish (and Galician and Basque, too  )

I'm very glad to see that this step is made; it's the only thing that prevented me from spreading this program to all my friends..

That'd be great! Grab the file! Let me know if you have any trouble working with it.

The code has been commited. If you want to test your translation(s) before sending it, save the file as src/celestia/kde/po/es.po (gl.po eu.po) and do a make, make install.

I'll try to do it this evening, if I have spare time. Thank you very much. Mmm, you know that the Basque language is Euskera, you are well informed..

Not really, I cheated ;-) I just looked up the two letter code for Basque in the KDE i18n list.

We could translate it onto Crotian, Bosnian, Serbian.
We are currently implementing our own Translation System which will be included into Celestia Extension App(lication).
What am I doing? Ah, nothing much. Just laying on my bed, watching the stars, and sky, and keep asking myself: 'Where the Hell is my Roof?'.

Dan probeer ik het in het Nederlands.

Than I will try to do it into Dutch.

it can be translated using KBabel or your favorite text editor

But on this FTP are so many ! :? I took kbabel-1.2beta2.tar.bz2 but how can I extract it ?

The only way I can edit this file is with the old edit.com.

And where is my Avatar.

Maybe my first message wasn't clear enough, this is for the KDE (i.e. Linux) version of Celestia only for now.

KBabel is a KDE application, it is part of the kdesdk package, you need Linux and KDE to use it.

I also forgot to mention that there is a translation How-To on the KDE i18n site which is an interesting read for those who want to contribute.

Even if you don't run Linux you can still of course provide a translation if you want to, but you won't be able to use it, that's not really motivating...

O.K. I'll use the old edit.com, but it's still motivating, it will be 1 bit that I added to this great program !

I'll send it to you tomorrow, but I hope you let someboby else check it, because my Dutch grades were never good.

I've put up a status page where translators can retrieve their message file merged with the latest strings in CVS.

It's not really necessary to keep your message file perfectly in sync with CVS, at least not before we're in a freeze before a release. You we'll be given a couple week's notice before a release to finish up your work.

Question about celestia-kde.pot

Post #18by Wheelie » 12.06.2003, 08:40

If the msgid is an empty string and the msgstr is not the next line than should I add/translate these lines in between to... ? :?

#: kdepreferencesdialog.cpp:293
msgid ""
"\n"
"Selection: "
msgstr ""

And that "\n" looks like LISP a programming language I use in AutoCad. 8O
In LISP it's a end of line command.

If I finish it I'll send it to you Buzz, and if you than send it to JulesStoop...
It will be double checked. !

Yes, \n is an end of line.

This msgid is just a multiline message, your translated must have the same format. If you want you can have a look at a translated file on the status page.
