Brand new Magellan model and Venus orbit ssc

Post #1by JackHiggins » 23.05.2003, 21:14

Hey everybody!

Now that my exams are over, I can finally spend some time releasing models that i've had in the works for the last while! (Yes, this isn't the only one!)

Here's Magellan, the Venus Radar Mapper Spacecraft. Magellan was built mostly from spare parts from other missions, including Mariner, Voyager, and even the space shuttle. That's why it only took me a few days to do, since I just robbed the parts from other models... Download from http://homepage.eircom.net/~jackhiggins/celestia/ but first, here are the screenshots:

The ssc and model downloads are in two seperate zips.

Enjoy it!! :D

Great model as always, but I appear to be missing some solar panels!!!

PS Any chance of MARINER 9? ;-)

Ooops...

Sorrry.. Forgot to include the solar panel texture in the zip..

If you have any of my other models just copy the "whateversolar.bmp" and rename it "magellansolar.bmp"

I'll fix the zip in 2 seconds thanks!!

Ok that's fixed now!

Mariner 9 looks pretty easy i'm just checking it now... I'll have a go at it so, but don't know if there are any good ssc elements for it... (Certainly no xyz's...)

What do your pictures look like....? I must admit I wasn't able to get any really close up pictures... The ones i have seen look pretty similar to the model though (I think anyway)

Hey all

This particular post ties together a number of topics being discussed recently, so i'm going to post it a few times...

I've made a model of Magellan with the IUS still attached, as it looks in all the photos from the Space Shuttle, when it was being deployed. Download from http://homepage.eircom.net/~jackhiggins/celestia/ but have a quick look at the screenshots first:

Hope you like it!

PS Thanks to everyone for the 1000+ hits on my site since the end of April! :D

question about the orbit. the model you created is not facing always the planet. is it right?? or there is a problem in his rotation??

Well the orbit elements themselves are correct, but the rotation is just guesswork really... It's accurate for the part when it's closest to the surface (The dish is pointing at venus and mapping using radar) but apart from that I don't think so.

Most of the other spacecraft addons for Celestia dont have accurate rotation periods either though, because they would be too complex to replicate using just RotationPeriod, obliquity & precession
