Mars 16K dds?

Post #1by MidnightWatcher » 18.05.2003, 22:31

Anybody know where to get a Mars 16K dds ? I'm trying to see if Cydonia is visible with this resolution... tried with an 8K dds but can't find it.

these have been produced by me a year ago. They have static bumps (relief), have no specular channel, and also Earth has no polar caps on it. The original texture is from BM's 43K version. No color correction was applied by me.
But you can add a low res specular map and low res bump/normal map in Solarsys.ssc tough.

As a programmer I am allways using my own tools. nvdxt tool is buggy and memory hungry. The procedure is little bit complicated, but if you are serious I can send you tools and instructions how to create even 64K dds files.

Hi Pixel,

Your tool works very fine and compared with nvdxt very fast. Thank you :D.

Now I only need a program for conversion from (large) DDS to BMP or another commen picture format. Do you know such a tool ?

Bye Jens

Way back at the beginning of the thread...

At 16K, the Cydonia region is indeed visible, and you can even see the famous "Face on Mars" mesa as a fuzzy bump, but no features are visible on it.

Here's an image that might help you locate it:

And here's a 2m/pixel image of the "Face" taken by the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft:

Sweet. When the left half of the face is mirrored, it looks human -- like a Pharoah or something. When the right side is mirrored, it looks like a lion. This reminds of something from Ezekiel 41:18-19 "And [it was] made with cherubims and palm trees, so that a palm tree [was] between a cherub and a cherub; and [every] cherub had two faces; So that the face of a man [was] toward the palm tree on the one side, and the face of a young lion toward the palm tree on the other side: [it was] made through all the house round about"

Are there any dds files larger than 16k? I'm curious to look at that five-sided pyramid structure bumpmapped.
