I haven't been able to figure out what the problem is with ringed planets. The 9700 and 9500 work fine, and Celestia doesn't use any OpenGL extensions that are present on the 9700 and not on the 8500. I really suspect that there's a driver bug involved . . .

When rendering a ringed planet, there are two types of shadows that are shown--the shadow of the planet on the rings, and the shadow cast by the rings onto the planet. In Celestia 1.2.5, the planet-to-ring shadows were the only ones rendered on ATI cards. That's changed in 1.3.0, and I'm fairly confident that it's the ring-to-planet shadows that are causing the problem. I'd recommend that 8500, 9000, and 9100 users turn off ring shadows in the View Options dialog (find it in the Render menu . . .) Not having the ring shadows is a loss, but it's better than a crash . . . Anyhow, I'll continue to pursue this issue, but at the moment I'm really at a loss to explain why ring shadows present such a problem for some ATI cards.

Disabling 'ring shadows' solves the problem for me :D Thanks Chris!

More problems with ATI

In addition for mentioned above I have problems with daysides of Pluto, Mercury, Venus and Mars. They're not visible at all! I can see only the glimpse of their atmosphare. The problem card is common you all.

Athlon tb 1,33
512 DDR
Club ATI Radeon 9100 128Mb
Win XP (no SP1)

More information will given if needed!

hi Masse,

I think I had the same problem the first time I tried v 1.3.0. Now, and i don't know why, it's gone. As always, if you don't have the last drivers, update them it will maybe fix the problem.

If it doesn't and if it is the same problem I had, for me it seemed to be related to bump map, so by editing the solarsys file and disabling all the bumpmap lines (ie bumpmap, bumpheight) you will maybe fix the problem.

Hope this help you.

G.

Cats 3.5

I just updated to Catalyst drivers 3.5. And still no fix. People with Radeons, please submit the bug report to ATI so that they at least notice this bug in bug reports.

Catalyst 3.6

Post #28by Solneman » 18.07.2003, 08:38

With the new ATI driver "Catalyst 3.6" the ring shadow problem still exists...

Offtopic: My favorite (freeware) car simulation from http://www.racer.nl looks worse compared to all drivers before! So ATI what's up? Drunken by success? Come on....

:(

Yup I can confirm this. Still not fixed in Catalyst 3.6 :( Writing another driver feedback report and if you haven't done the same allready please do so. You can also PM the guy that started this thread (which is read by ATI) on Rage3D so he can add more info or up the number of confirmations. The Celestia problem is allready on this list.

This probably doesn't matter but here goes:

So far I haven't had any of the symptoms described or any other for that matter. I can view the ring shadows without problem. I'm using Celestia V1.3.1 pre5

ATI Problems w.Saturn fixed but i have others too w. stars

Post #31by GBombadil » 09.08.2003, 08:38

Image

I recently format my PC and install again celestia, and i download the most recently drivers for my ati 8500 128mb ddr. after that i started with the same satrun problem, but, fixing the vertex to multitexture it was solved(from openGL blah...) , but when i get closer to a star (seems to be passing -28.42 apparent mag i start to see what you can see in the image, and this shapes start moving across my entire screen) i want to know if there's a solution, because i toggled all options on and off and seems nothing, solve my troubles, i also changed my openGL conf to max performance, then max quality, but seems to no work with any conf.

Any suggestions will be really apreciated.

Thanks,

Giorgio

ps: sorry about the english.

Sorry: The things you describe are due to bugs in ATI's OpenGL drivers for their lower performance cards. Radeon 9500 (and above) does not have problems like this. You'll have to report it to ATI.

Post #34by GBombadil » 09.08.2003, 19:34

Thanks by your time, i'll do, so as it's an OpenGL bug there's not a chance to be solved by configuring Celestia?.

Thanks anyway.

You might try Celestia v1.2.4, which can be downloaded from SourceForge. It doesn't have many of the new features, but since it doesn't require OpenGL v1.4, it might work better for you.

Unfortunately the new Catalyst 3.7 drivers still don't fix this problem. So keep reporting this to ATI.

I checked with GLview And it says that these extensions are missing:

OpenGL 1.3
GL_ARB_multisample

OpenGL 1.4
GL_ARB_shadow

Does this have anything to do with the shadows problem?

Cats 3.8 :(

I just installed Catalyst 3.8 drivers and the bug still has not been fixed. So we still have to send as many reports as possible.

And what about the two missing features above? Are they the cause of this bug?

Cats 3.10

There is some good news about Catalysts 3.10. The planet texture is not corrupt anymore :)

But the problem with very slow rendering and ugly rings (blocky / aliased) is still here.

So keep on reporting this problem to ATI until they fix it!

Texture problem quick fix

Post #40by galpd320 » 17.01.2004, 21:12

ATI users, just go to render and select view options. Then turn ring shadows off and Saturn and Uranus' texture and speed problems are fixed and they still look good.
